Poll: To Cut or Not!

Okay, I know this has been talked about forever, but since last week I am loosing tons of hair. I have spoken to my surgeon, nutritionist and PCP and they all say nothing can be done. I have been taking Biotin and fish oil for over a month now and I will not stop taking it just in case. The question is: Did you or will you if you have hair loss cut it? and if so short or just a trim? My hair now is by the middle of my back and my mom says to cut it short that it usually makes it stronger. And some people have told me not to cut it, just to deal with it? What do you think would be the best option? Thanks in advance! Mayra

I knew before surgery that I might lose great amounts of hair so I cut my very short. I figured it wouldnot look like so much to me and at least short it would maybe looked better. I have always heard it makes your hair stronger (like your mom said) but I am not sure. Just figured if it were going to fall out, I would cut it short and the new hair wouldn't have so far to grow to catch up with the rest. Mine is coming out pretty heavy now. Maybe I'll just buy a wig. Good luck Carol

I am still a pre-op, but like you my hair is at the middle of my back. Whenever I have surgery and I get to the stage that I'm losing my hair, I think I will most likely go ahead and cut it shorter. Not majorly short, and I'll probably consult my hair dresser and get her opinion. But I will probably end up cutting it around shoulder length or so. Hugs Kim

Mayra, Personally, I think cutting it shorter if you are losing helps you deal with the hair loss and it's not like you can't grow it out again. I cut my hair from well below my shoulders to a cute longer shag well above my shoulders shortly after surgery in anticipation of hair loss. As my hair started to come out a few months ago, I went from med strawberry blonde to the same but with lots of blonde highlights to try to hide the loss up front. About three weeks ago, I went back to a dark auburn and more of a bob mostly because of the time of year and I wanted a richer color for the cooler weather. Who knows what I'll do next time. I adore my stylist (who is considering WLS BTW) and she always has great suggestions for me. My latest doo seems to be the best one yet, at least that's what my friends and family say. I say "GO FOR IT!"

I am pre-op (my surgery is scheduled 2/22) and had long hair also. I already cut mine short and donated it to Locks of Love. I have a friend who went through the same thing you are. Her hair was thick and long just below her shoulders. As she started to lose her hair she cut it shorter and the thinning wasn't as noticeable. As it is starting to grow back and thicken again her short cut looks nice. I have always heard that cutting/trimming hair on a regular basis helps to keep it healthier My opinion would be to CUT. I cut my hair short before surgery, cuz I was just sick of it then. I am glad I cut my hair short now that I am losing it. I have really thick hair and I have been losing it for about a month now...my husband says I have no thin spots yet. I remember when I was pregnant years ago with long hair and I would freak at the amount of hair I was losing. I think the longer the hairs are, the worse it looks in your hands and wrapped around your fingers. Now I just see a few short hairs, ok a see quite a few at times but it don't effect me as much has in the past. Plus I think I look cuter with the shorter hair now that I have dropped weight, I use to think I looked like a man with short hair. Tracey

Mayra, I am one year post op. I started losing hair around 4 months. It does grow back. I have tons of new growth. My hair is shoulder length. I kept the top on the short side to make it appear thicker. I am also a former hair stylist. Try using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner. Also take zinc daily. Hang in there! best wishes, Debbie

When my hair starts to fall out I plan on getting it cut. It is very thin and will look bad if I lose any. Instead of telling us about the hair cut you need to post a new pic of you....
