OT - Jacksonville?
We are relocating from Philadelphia to Jacksonville. Does anyone have advice on the area? Good areas/ places to avoid? I'm also concerned because I'm in an interracial marriage and have a biracial 9 month old and racism is always on my mind with moving to new places. I want my family to be comfortable.
I am going to need a surgeon once I get there too, so any advice in that department would be warmly welcomed.
Thank you!
Amy
I grew up around and lived there for quite some time..I now live in cocoa beach...My parents still live in Jax. The good thing about Jax is that it is kinda a military town and that seems to make people a little more accepting of different people and situations. I am married in an interracial relationship too and have never felt uncomfortable there. My parents just recently built a new home in Middleburg just out of Orange park..This area used to kinda have a reputation of being a bit backward but their subdivision is quite mixed. I think the Orange Park and Mandarin areas seem really nice and would recommend checking them out. Good luck on your move and your journey.

I am originally from Lancaster, PA and I absolutely loved living in the Riverside area of Jacksonville. Its a historic district, lots of gorgeous trees everywhere and reasonable housing too. Its on the edge of town and close to major highways, and lots of shopping. It is also close to a funky little artsy district called "Five Points".
Good luck on your move =)

Hi Amy,
I was born and raised in Jacksonville. I moved to Allentown, PA, met my husband and we moved back here 7 years ago. As the previous poster said, Mandarin is a really nice part of town as in Orange Park. Typically it depends on where you work. Most people don't like to commute over the bridges. For example, if you live in Orange Park but work in Jax and need to go over the Buckman Bridge, traffic is horrible during am and pm rush hours.
When will you be moving? I'd be more than happy to send you real estate information (houses or apartments) I can send you info from the Sunday Paper. You can also view the Jacksonville Newspaper classifieds online. Website: www.jacksonville.com
Good Luck with your move and getting settled in. I'm also in a monthly support group for WLS that meets on Saturday in Orange Park. If you would like more information let me know.
Also, there are a handful of WLS centers and Dr's in Jax. As well as Ocala and Gainesville (some pt's perfer to go out of the city to a surgeon). It also depends on your Insurance.
The Dr. I'm choosing to go to is Dr. Yasrebi,I just attended his monthly seminar (he holds one on the first Tuesday of every month). But there are others, you need to go to the one you are most comfortable with and confident in.
I'm here if you need anything!!!

I don't live in the area but I traveled from the panhandle to Jax to have my surgery. It is a nice area and my PCP was in Mandarin and I think he is great. He is very friendly with a good sense of humor. He seems very concerned with my health and he is wls friendly. He worked up all my test and made sure I was ready for surgery. His name is Dr. Young at 5614 San Jose Blvd, Jacksonville. My surgeon was Dr. G.Steven Webb, 3599 University Blvd, Jacksonville (right behind Memorial hospital. I think they were both great with lots of caring help.
Good luck on your move.........I know you are going to love our state and you are going to love this board. We are some friendly people.

Hey Amy,
I lived Orange park for 16 years and my hubby and I bought a house 2 years ago in Middleburg. Of the two I would reccomend Orange Park to a biracial family. Middleburg is coming around but still a little behind in that respect.
I loved Orange Park and some of my family lived in Mandarin. Mandarin gets pretty pricey but is a nice area. Email if you would like more info. on the area or just want to chat! Hubby and I love meeting people. So let me know if ya want a tour when you get here!

Trust me jacKsonville is Bi racial friendly..
most places are..
It's not at all like the northern states..Jacksonville is surrounded by miliatary bases and a lot of them are bi-racial or mixed nationalities.. You're gonna like it there.
of course you'll always encounter that one person who doesn't like it, but that'll happen anywhere you go..
Don't worry about anyone else..worry about you and your family and things will be just fine..
