OK - this is probably the dumbest question you've seen so far... I am a fingernail biter & cuticle chewer. Do I need to TRY to stop biting my nails before surgery? If I were to swallow a nail or bit of cuticle will it hurt my new pouch? I know this sounds crazy but I'm worried that this lifelong habit could really become a problem post-op. Thanks for any advice you can give me. Also - just a quick survey - do you bite your nails or chew your cuticles? Vickie J.

Not a dumb question. I was a biter and nervous about it also. Decided I would have to stop after surgery. Actually I did very easy. I was very relax the first couple days after surgery with the meds and didn't think about biting ........by the time I thought of it, they had grown and I have bitten them since. ANOTHER reason for surgery. Actually, I find my self picking at them a little but I have just found other things to keep me busy. Don't have all that time to be nervous and bite. Good luck. Carol

I am so glad you asked. I wasn't brave enough! I am a terrible nail biter. I guess I will have to start stopping!

I wore acrylic nails before surgery and for about 8 months afterward because I too was a biter. Due to finances I had to stop getting my nails done and I too am finding out my natural nails are stronger and healthier than they have ever been. Is this due to all the calcium we take? I have to file mine down. They grow like weeds. They never break. If I bang them on something I might get a slight nick where I have to file it out but never the full breakage like in the past. I would suggest you do whatever it takes to stop biting or at least stop swallowing. It will be one more bad habit you got rid of. I also never swallow gum anymore. Even though at almost 2 years out it would probably be OK. I am just very careful about anything foreign. Good luck to you. Char

ok this might sound dumb but i used to do it to my neice and nephew put just a little hot sauce on the tips of your fingers let dry (you might have to do this a couple times) once you go to chew you will taste the hot sauce and wont want to do it again. but make sure u dont have a habbit of rubbing your eyes ouch or you can just have something close to fiddle with when you notice your biteing pick it up. just think new body and pretty nails. i know dumb but it does work on some people
