Important!!! Bone Info!!!!
I had my first bone density scan today. Thankfully, no osteoporosis. BUT... I thought I would post the "TO DO" list handout the technologist gave me. Make of it what you will...
Osteoporosis "The Silent Killer"
Recommendations from the Osteoporosis Foundation, the World Health Organization, and the Florida Osteoporosis Foundation
1. Take 1200-1800 mgs of calcium with vitamin D per day. Do not take all of the calcium at once. Calcium is best taken with your meals. You must wait 4 hours between each dose of your calcium supplement. Do not drink anything warm when you take your calcium supplement.
2. Reduce your risk of falls and alcohol comsumption.
3. Exercise (non-impact) walking, bikning, swimming, etc.
4. Stop smoking.
5. Take the appropriate medication for bone loss when directed by your physician.
The technician also said make sure your calcium was oyster shell calcium because it is better absorbed.
My Opinion: The technican knew I had gastric bypass... I told her that the leading majority suggests taking calcium citrate. I told her I took Citracal with Mag and Vit D added. She agreed that would be fine. ???
Make of this what you will. I stiil don't have the results of the calcium levels but she did tell me I didn't have osteoporosis. I will continue to take what the majority recommends...

I've had two bone density tests in the last 4 years. Even though I had one last December just before surgery, I'm not going to wait 2 years for a repeat like I normally do. It seems that "carrying weight" is helpful in preventing osteoporosis but after WLS and significant weight loss the smaller frame puts us females in a higher risk classification.
