After the long appeal process I was finally approved. I can't express how excited I am. I don't have an exact date yet but I know that the surgery will be in the next 12 days. I have a question. What is the recovery time after the surgery? By that I mean when can I really get up and move around on my own. I ask because I start my next semester in January and it's going to be a tough semester. Any suggestions. Thank you

Everyone is different but when I came out of the hospital after 2 days, I was getting around great. I went to the mall and walked for a couple hours on the 5th day out of surgery. Unless you are taking something very physically strenuous in college (like maybe hurling cute guy students) , you should be fine. Just remember to get in your protein, water and walk, walk, walk. Congrats on your approval and upcoming surgery. You will be in my prayers. Carol

Hi Melissa, Congradulations on the approval! That is definitly news to jump about! I wish you the very best and hope all goes well! As far as the recovery time, I think most people are different and it depends on what procedure you have. I personally was moving around pretty well by week 3 with minimal pain. I was feeling totally great though by about week 5 or 6! Best of Luck and you will be in my prayers! MICHELLE

Unless you are at school all day long, you should be fine starting your classes in January. I was able to do short errands like the grocery store, getting a pedicure within the first few days. I think I even got a scooter at SuperTarget and rode around the store with a friend for an hour on day 5. I desperately needed a nap every afternoon to re-energize myself but I aside from that I felt pretty good after the first week. I went back to work at 3 weeks and worked 6 hr days for that first week, then was back to 830am-530pm by week 4. I still needed my daily naps for the first month or so. Amy

Melissa, Congrats on your approval! Persistance pays off!! I've no idea about recovery. I've read that Lap RNY is 3-4 days in hospital and 2-6 wks recovery - depends on your pain tolerance and healing speed. Best of luck & a speedy recovery! Vickie J.

Congratulations.!!!!! We are all different and it also depends on the type of surgery. I tired easily and was not physicallyr ready to go back to work at the end of 6 weeks. But I had some minor problems. That is what I wanted to caution you about. Since we are all diferent, you might have some minor problems but do not give up, it will all be worth it. Remember the WLS board will help you with any questions that we can.

Melissa, I know exactly how you feel, I was just approved on Monday and it is such an exciting feeling to know our lives will be changing and for me I feel like I am getting a second chance. I don't have a date either, but I know mine will be the end of Jan. or first part of Feb. (hopefully). I am a Girl Scout Leader and we start selling cookies Jan 6 so I have to wait until we are done with that (what dedication, huh?) and I don't have anyone else to do the ordering. Good Luck with your surgery. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year (and what a GREAT year 2005 will be)! Tammy Soon to be Loser
