When I was scheduling my surgery date the gal in the clinic recommended that I start a diet now before the surgery. She said slim fast for breakfast and lunch and a sensible dinner. Does this mean regular slim fast or carb control slim fast and should I be following an Atkins approach or just sensible portions of normal meal for dinner. My surgeon is Dr. Jawad and my date is 1/11/05. Any info is appreciated. I have been doing the low carb thing so far but when I went to buy some more slimfast shakes today I realized there are two different kinds and now I am so confused.

I believe that dr jawad wants you to follow a diet that is high in protein and low carbs. I also went on that diet and I got the slim fast that was low carbs.I had my surgery on nov 9 2004. I am down from 308 to 274. So his diet before and after works...

Jerry is right about the high protein and low carb thing, but I never tried the Slim Fast. I chose another product, but the idea is the same - low carb and high protein and sensible, higher in protein dinner. Good luck!! You've got yourself a wonderful surgeon! Jan

I didn't have a prescribed preop diet but I put myself on protein drinks (1-2 a day) about 6 wks prior to surgery. The added protein before surgery helps healing. I'm glad that I did because I wasn't able to immediately get in all the protein I needed after surgery. Congratulations on the surgery date! LuvitsunnyV

My doc did not require any special diet pre-op just full liquids 2 days before surgury and clear liq the day before surgury. I did increase my protein for the month before surgury. It was also a good opportunity to try different protein shakes.

Kirsten, I use LoCarb Slim Fast Meals-no refinned sugar they use Slenda/Sucralose. I drink it daily and have been drinking these protein (20gr) with tons of vitamins in it as well as iron. I have looked into and tried most all and this one I get in the can, shake it and its ready. Also comes in 4 flavors of which I use two-choclate & strawberries & cream. Don't get confuse with Slimfast Options, the ingredients are different than the grams in protein so check on what you need. Since Aug I have lost18lbs using it 3-4 times a day as my meal. My date hasn't been set yet but I have an idea it will be here shortly. Good Luck. Ginny

From the time that I was approved -->Pre-Op Class -->Surgery, I only had 5 days. Although I was mighty tempted by the Last Supper Syndrome, I drank protein drinks and experimented with 1.5 ounce portions of meat proteins. Can you call the nutritionist for more specific info? Congratulations!! Kristen

I did the two week liquid diet and loss 20 lbs besides! And I was doing the Atkins diet for 6 months prior. It is very well worth the dieting BEFORE surgery to get your body in better shape for surgery and shrink the fatty on the liver. Also start exercising. It will give you a big "jump start" on your weight loss! I'm three months out of surgery now and have loss a TOTAL of 97 lbs including weight loss before surgery. I had "no pain" at all for my lap RNY. And I believe it was from losing weight before and exercising.
