Question of the Day

With the holidays coming up and lots of special things being prepared to enjoy, I have been remembering lots of family dinners from my youth. My great grandmother (Grandma Mabel) used to make sticky buns that were as good, if not better than Cinnabon. She would never shared her recipe with anyone before she passed away so unfortunately, no one knows how she made those wonderful treats. Granted, I wouldn't indulge now because that would be a definite dumping trigger for me, but I still have the memories of how tasty they were for everyone. Do you have any "secret" family recipes? Have a great weekend everyone! Amy -118lbs.

My mom's chicken cacciatore was the best! But when she showed me how she made it, I saw why it was so good. She pan fried the chicken and made sure to use all the pan drippings in the sauce! I have since "slimmed down" the recipe and found a way to make it in the crockpot so it it good tasting and good for you! It's one of my DH's favorites. Linda

I'm not known for my cooking, so I have no recipes as they would be totally lost on me!! Happy Weekend! I'm decorating for Christmas this weekend because it's my last 2 days off until the end of the year! Jan

I am not a cooker either. My sons do like my macaroni salad and SOS so I guess I am not a complete failure.

I love to cook, just hate cleaning up afterward...My mother was a horrible cook, but when I was 15 my grandmother moved in with us. I watched her cook every night. I make everything from scratch even my own noodles. I make the dough and roll them out with a rolling pin. The dish I make that is most requested is with pork, saurkraut and dumplings. I used to can my own kraut every year but it is too humid in florida to make kraut, it molds too quickly. But every time I get together with my children, they request I make that.

We have a family chili we make that we think is special. I have actually written a cookbook with our family recipes. I worked on compiling it for a long time and still find some written down that I add to it. Maybe someday I will get it published. My Grandmother made a peanut butter roll that we haven't found the recipe for yet. She was kinda secretive. Have a great day. Carol

For it was my grandmothers homemade pierogies! Since I dont know how I just buy the Mrs. T Brand and they are pretty good but still not Grandmas. Every Christmas season my Grandmother and I would make kolacki which are cream cheese and butter based cookies with walnuts or poppyseed filling. We used to package them up and send them to family members but now that she has been gone I try to keep up the tradition but its just not the same without her. It makes me tear up everytime I pull out her hand written recipe. Elaine

My mom makes these treats made with dates and rolled in coconut... they are absolutely to die for! I don't know how to make them but if I did I would probably eat them morning, noon and night! My favorite holiday dish my grandma used to make was pecan pie. Growing up in Oklahoma, there are pecan trees everywhere. Every fall, we would pick up our own pecans, take them to the pecan house and have them cracked and shelled. My grandma never followed a recipe for her pecan pies, she would just add ingredients until it looked and tasted right. I can follow any pecan pie recipe and even buy a store bought pecan pie, but nothing even comes close to my grandma's pecan pies. My other favorite dish my grandma always made without a recipe was her homemade chicken and dumplings. She also made her own cornbread without a recipe. My grandma is gone as well, but I swear sometimes I can still smell her kitchen. It always smelled "spicy" like cinnamon and vanilla... the kind of smell that made you feel like you were home.

My mom always makes good sweet potatoes with walnuts. One year they were EXTRA good and we didn't know why. Then when she was doing dishes she found there was something melted on the edge of the dish. She had left baked them with saran wrap still over them!!! She would make everything ahead of time then have to bake in shifts. We tease her that for Christmas she should use the red and green saran.
