OT: I can't START!!!
I think I've started my period and I cannot handle that! I'm on coumadin for a recent DVT and the last time I was on it years ago my periods go sooo out of whack and heavy that I went to the ob/gyn and started depo provera (now there were other factors, my periods were always abnormal, but being on coumadin pushed me over the edge)
I noticed some spotting this afternoon, I hope it's not the start of anything. As I said, I can't handle having my period while on Coumadin...I haven't been theraputic and just today my doctor has raised my dose again. I am now on 15mg a day. I'm afraid this is going to cause me to have my period. I know supposedly it shouldn't but I also know my body.
I'm not a doctor either, but I understood every word you said! I think you'll have to watch very closely because as you work to get to therapeutic levels with the coumadin, if you go too high, you would have a tendancy to "bleed out" and you don't want that to happen. I would call the doctor if your bleeding gets out of control, and you will know it!
I've had patients that would bleed out of their eyes and any other orifice when their coumadin levels went up too high.
Amy, coumadin is a blood thinner (like heparin) and if your blood is too thin and doesn't clot fast enough you could be in danger.

That is what sucks...I had to go to the bathroom but was late for my appointment so I went there...got my finger stuck and INR checked and the doctor asked if I had any unusual bleeding I said no...some minor bruising...but I bruised easily before being on coumadin. So then as soon as I get back to work I go to the bathroom and notice the spotting. I am glad I wear a thin pad everyday just for hygiene.
Oh and by the way...thanks for the "orifice" line I needed that worry.
Just kidding!
Really thanks for responding....I'm very happy with my PCP and will not hesitate to call her. The spoting resembled old blood so hopfully it's nothing major.

Amy, you'll have to decide if you want medical terms or just acronyms. My sister says I'm the queen of acronyms and there's just a TON in medicine, so I'm in heaven!!
A DVT is a Deep Vein Thrombosis. It's a blood clot in a main vein, usually in the leg. To get rid of it, you're put on heparin IV or coumadin (warfarin) by mouth, and sometimes you get to wear TED hose which constricts your legs and you keep your legs up and stay still. Left untreated, the clot could break off and end up going to the lungs, causing a PE (Pulmonary Embolism).
Impressive, huh?
I'm no expert, but this was kinda fun.
