Pre-Op testing (deciphering codes)
I got my paperwork from the surgeon and I have several tests I need done but I'm not sure what they are or what to expect, I'm hoping someone can help me decipher these!
U/A (urine analysis?)
CBC (I think this is a complete blood count?)
PT
PTT
SMAT 18
EKG - is this where they make you ride a bike and measure your heart rate?
and the Chest X-ray which I've already had done.
Any help would be appreciated, I'm just wondering what some of those tests are and what they determine. Thanks!!!!!
PT = Prothrombin Time
PTT = Partial Thromboplastin Time
Both are coagulation tests to see how thin your blood is and if you will stop bleeding in a reasonable amount of time during surgery and/or if you might be prone to PEs.
CBC = Complete Blood Count (you were right) and includes RBC (Red blood count) | HGB (Hemoglobin) | HCT (Hematocrit) | MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume) | MCH (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin) | MCHC (Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin Concentration) | RDW (Red Cell Distribution Width) | Platelets | MPV (Mean Platelet Volume) |
WBC - Neutrophils | Lymphocytes | Monocytes | Eosinophils | Basophils

That is all "Greek" to me.
Pre-op I had lung xray, upper GI, sonagram, they tested the blood gases and did a breathing test.
On the sonagram they looked at my gallbladder and kidneys. They found a gallstone so the gallbladder came out at surgery too.
Before surgery I had a complete physical with my heart dr as I wanted to make sure everything was ok there before surgery.
I told someone I was was checked from top to bottom prior to surgery, some required and some for precaution.
