How do you give back to the community? United Way contributions? donations? volunteering? visiting or caring for an elderly neighbor? another way?

I personally have a HUGE problem with the Red Cross and the United Way. By the way, I did break down and call for some help after Hurricane Frances to get some help putting a tarp on my roof that was leaking. This is just after my surgery 6 weeks ago. So far, I haven't heard from them yet..... I'm on the board of the Marion County Continuity of Care Council which raises money for several charities each year and next year I'm slated to become it's President. I give to Interfaith which is a community charity, I give to the Salvation Army, and I give to my church and missionary projects. And to be honest, I don't much like talking about it - it makes me uncomfortable, but it's an interesting question. Jan

Jan, Thanks for posting even though you prefer to not talk about it. I actually hesitated posting this question, but decided if people dont want to respond, they wont. That has been the case in the past with other questions and I'm sure will be the case in the future. But I must say, you always answer the questions regardless and I (we) appreciate that . Have a great day! Amy

I think the question is fine, but I feel funny saying "here's a list of some of the wonderful things I do", if you know what I mean!! Jan

Good Morning, I have payroll deductions to the United Way , I work for the YMCA and this is definately a suggested thing for all of us full time employees. Whenever time permits, I try to volunteer at the Humane Society. I was a Boy Scout leader for a long time but now that my boys are teens I have given it up. Elaine

I am running late on getting on the board BUT I am ready now. I also have some issue with Red Cross and actually several "organized charities" I prefer to do my helping one on one or local. I give to local fundraisers we have in the area for individuals with medical. Of course that is usually buying a dinner and that gives me something also. Also the buckets put in local stores for people needing $$ for surgeries, meds, etc. I give to Lupus Foundation and Arthritis Research. We give to local nursing homes and make up holiday bags for the patients. I try to stay informed of young mothers in my area and help them with info, support, food and love. I have two teen daughters still at home. We get involved in the environment of our Bay and community. I hope do have a more active part in all this now that I am such a loser Carol -8

I give back by, working, voting, abiding ALL laws and paying my taxes. If all citizens did these 4 things, the US would have virtually no problems. Just my humble opinion... Flavia

I volunteer at my daughters school everytime I get a chance, plus I am on the PTA board as the recording secretary so I have meetings monthly for that. I am also the Spirit Coordinator...I hand out the prizes for the classes with the most spirit on spirit day. I donate the kids clothing and old toys to different organizations. I also donate dog food and treats to Greyhounds Pets of America in Longwood and I am thinking about volunteering there too. Whenever there is a food drive in the neighborhood or at school I send items. I try to give as much as I can whether it is time, money or items. Tracey
