Question about soft foods phase
I have a question for all of you post-ops (and any pre-ops that may know). I am lactose-intolerant
(even to cheese-I cannot do milk at all) and I also hate
veggies (expect potatoes) Do you have any suggestions what things besides JELLO I can eat when I start soft foods? I also cannot do oatmeal and I do not like to drink soy milk. ANy suggestions??? Thanks!!
Kim

What does your surgeon say? The only thing I can think of that would be high protein and soft is finely chopped egg salad or LF refried beans.
In defense of soy milk, I dont care for it either but since I became lactose intolerant after my surgery, I started buying it in vanilla and chocolate flavor only to add to my protein shakes because I didnt care for them mixed with water.
Good luck

Hey Amy! Thanks for all of your support. I will have to try the silk chocolate and that cheese. I have not yet had my nutrition class yet with US Bariatrics because I am still waiting for a date. The psych's office is taking forever faxing my test results. Thanks for all the info though. C-ya on the 30th!
Thanks a bunch!
Kim
Kim,
My Dad was like you until about 3 years ago, he only ate potatoes, corn and peas then a friend of the family prepared broccoli and my Dad tried it to not be rude and he loved it. Now he and my Mom eat broccoli all the time, cracks me up.
There isn't ANY non-starchy vegetable that you like????? Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, salads, etc., nothing? You're missing out, Girl!
I know I thought I didnt like peppers and black olives then tried them again years ago and wa-la, I liked them. I developed a taste for eggplant late too.
I truly hope you find enough nutritious foods that you like to eat that you can tolerate after WLS since so many of us struggle with so many foods after surgery.
Good luck!
Amy

Kim,
Soft foods can include, scrambled eggs, chili, spaghetti sauce without the spaghetti noodles, chicken salad, tuna salad, pork and beans, or refried beans. If you can stand it, you can also puree chicken, or beef also. As far as soy milk goes, we do what we have to do, to make this surgery work. Part of that is getting in all of our protein, if you can't do milk, try water based protein drinks, if they don't work for you, you may need to try soy products. steve
The carb countdown milk won't help. BUT there are dozens of LACTAID and DAIRY EASE products out there that will work . . . . whole milk, reduced fat milk, fat free milk, and chocolate milk. Also, yogurts and soft cheeses are fine, like cottage cheese and ricotta cheese. Or any food made out of tofu. They don't have the concentrated lactose in them, like the formed cheeses do. You can also take Lactaid tablets . . . or ANY Store brand dairy digesting aid. They are totally chewable and do not irritate the stomach in any way. But of course, check with your Dr first.
Tuna fish with fat free mayo, canned chicken with fat free mayo, canned crab meat with fat free mayo, canned ham with fat free mayo, and eggs, eggs, eggs. Chopped, sliced, scrambled over easy, poached, cooked through, however you like em! ANy kind of meat that you have made for the rest of the family put through a food chopper, and mixed with a little fat free mayo. Lentils pureed, refried beans.
You might be lucky like me. Once I had the surgery, I was surprisingly lactose TOLERANT!!!! This from a person whose mom and dad used to buy goats milk in the 60s becasue I couldn't drink milk. AH! There's an idea! Goats milk or kefir or any of the goat's milk cheeses: Italian ricotta salada, Greek feta.
Good luck, and ENJOY whatever you do eat!
