It wasn't ever something I discussed with my surgeon. As long as you are feeling well enough to travel, I think flying would be fine after surgery. I dont think I would have been able to travel the first week after surgery because the walking at the airport would have been too much, but I guess you could get a wheelchair and a porter to help. Just my two cents

Take extra water with you and sip all the way. I would worry about the dehydration.

One thing you need to consider is the length of the flight. Post Op you need to worry about blood clots, due to the amount of time you will not be able to walk. This also goes for long car rides. I do not know the length of time you would need to wait but I would wait at least 1 month, but best of all call your doctor. However some people do go out of the country to have the surgery and they have to come home at some point. No real answers from me. Wish I could be help.

I spoke to my surgeon about this...he stated that if I did fly..make sure that I get up and walk as often as possible..to keep the circulation going...the same for any long car trip...you need to walk every hour...

Alexa, one thing to consider, how far do you want to be away from your surgeon, so soon after surgery. I wouldn't recommend planning on going too far away, for at least 2-3 weeks weeks. I was lucky, I had no problems, and could have traveled after 10 -14 days, but some people have more problems, and need their surgeon. It's easier if you have a problem for him to say come in and see me, instead of, go to the emergency room and see if anyone there knows anything about your surgery, and can help you. If you don't have to take the trip, then my suggestion is don't do it, why have the extra anxiety, put it off until you can really enjoy it. Good luck, steve.

I had my surgery overseas, my doc said it was ok to travel 3 weeks post op from Brazil to Fl. By the time I got back I went straight to the emergency room. I ended up needing another 5 weeks to be able to go to work. Delay the trip is at all possible. My situation was an extreme one. The majority of people do not go through this, but why take the chances? All the best, good luck with whatever choice you make!! Flávia Open RNY 07/27/04 223/180.5/115
