My friend is trying to get her surgery approved and she is having a hard time. They are saying the insurance she has do not cover this surgery. She has her insurance coverage book and that is not listed. Has anyone been through this where you can direct her in the right path? Can you help her. The denial letter says "Benefits are not available for surgical and non-surgical treatment of obesity, including morbid obesity" which is not true. I do not know what they are trying to do. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

to the place in their literature where it says that. Does she have co-morbids? arrange for an appeal. Add up all the amounts of medicines, doctor visits, blood tests, test procedures in three years to maintain your health with those comorbids. My doctor's visits, medicines that the insurance covered and lab procedures just for JUST the diabetes came to over 7,000 a year. So in three years, that would be 21,000. Not to mention the costs for treating my other comorbids HBP, high cholesterol, eye care for retinapathy, and other things like periodontic care 4x year due to the diabetes and doctor visits due to pain in the joints, steroid shots, etc. In total, my expenses related to my comorbids was over 15,000 a year. the insurance company would be very happy to pay for the surgery and save themselves that much money over a period of many years. But she definately needs to see WHERE it says that they will not pay for surgical procedures in the literature. If it does, she may be out of luck. I didn't really have much of a prob with insurance, so other than keeping track of the expenses for the co morbids I really didn't have to do much. Maybe someone else here may be able to help, or there might even be a help site JUST for dealing with the insurance companies. I hope it works out.
