I dont have United but they have approved a lot of folks in the past if WLS was medically necessary. Have your friend call them to find out what they require for approval. I looked at the Insurers section for Florida and it looks like many had been approved earlier this year. With so many insurance companies talking about not approving surgery after the first of the year in the state, I would definitely have your friend start the process soon. Good luck

You have to call them directly and see if the type of coverage you have covers the surgery. Not all tiers of the insurance plans cover it. That's the best way to find out.

I HAVE UHC EPO! They told me over the phone there would be no coverage for WLS. I ended up self paying, and later on found out that they "accidentaly" misinformed me??!! Be careful when u call and double check EVERYTHING they tell you. Ask for the policy in writting, they probably will fuss over it, then youtalk to a supervisor...Good luck, I wish I had been more persistent... Flavia

I have United Healthcare and my policy will pay for the WLS as long as it is at Boca Raton Community Hospital, where I work. Most policys with United are individually written. So the only way to find out coverage and requirements is to call.

I have United HealthCare and they approved my WLS with no pre-requirements. I only had to pay a hospital deductible and the Surgical group's support services. I'm sure it depends on your particular coverage. Good luck. LuvitsunnyV@goal

After hearing so many insurance horror stories, I was so happy and surprised. Very fast approval, easy to deal with on the phone, no problems at all. I did have a lot of co morbids, though, so the letter of medical necessity was pretty convinceing. I wish your frined good luck.
