Help Eating problems 7 weeks out
Ok I have a problem and some questions... (I am seven weeks out as of yesterday) I am having some eating problems that started about two - three weeks ago. Every time I eat, I get an achy very uncomfortable feeling about two minutes after the first bite goes down. I am eating I think slowly, maybe not slow enough? It almost feels like I need to drink something to get the food pushed down, which I am sure comes from the fact that I am a southern gal and we always had tea with our dinners. I am sipping on something when I get this feeling. But It is happening every time I try to eat something other than my yogurt, puddings, or any kind of bread which seems to the best to most soothing to my stomach, go figure bread?? .. I don't know what to do and I don't know what all to be adding to my diet at this point. Give me some suggestions please. I am eating a lot of tuna and fish but dang its getting old! I have lost 56 lbs so I am doing something right but it is getting to the point where I don't want to eat because I know it is going to hurt. Please help!!
Robin,
Call your doctor and see what they think. It's strange that softer foods are going down OK but not other foods. I know you said you are eating slowly so assume you are taking small bites and chewing, chewing, chewing.
I am bad because I must have a drink available to me during meals. Sometimes, I just take a sip or two to wash food down and sometimes, I'll drink a little more. But I have noticed if I drink a significant amount (usually water) with a meal or too close to a meal, I usually dont feel well for awhile after eating and get may get hungry again sooner than normal. I am trying really hard to not drink more than a sip or two with food, but it is HARD.
Robin, it sounds like you are taking too big of bites. Take very small bites and chew, chew, chew. If it helps, try using a baby spoon or a shrimp fork to make sure you are not putting anything too big in your mouth. Another thing I have found, is due to bad eating habits before surgery, even when i would take small bites, I would follow it up with another small bite before swallowing the first bite, so two small bites become one big bite, try putting your fork down between bites. Also, depending on what you are eating, by sipping liquids with your food, it could be causing the food to swell in your stomach or throat. Try taking small bites, putting your fork down between bites, and not drinking anything with your meals and see if the problem goes away. Good luck, steve

Hey there- MY doctor told me to sip hot tea in the am to "relax" the pouch. He said food may go down easier after that. I hope it helps, let me know

Robin, This Thursday will be my six month anniversary. I still have the same issue you do, and it's funny, but it started at about 4-5 weeks out also. I think that if you eat slower you will be able to eat more. I haven't pushed it yet because I keep hearing that everyone has a "honeymoon" period where less food keeps them satisfied. So far I've been satisfied with the little bit that I can eat, so I'm happy. I also have two Unjury protein shakes a day and make sure I take ALL of my vitamins. Some things that I have found that I can eat are: Cheerios with a little milk and Splenda, cantalope, watermelon, spaghetti sauce (but not the spaghetti itself), black beans, and soup.
Congratulations on the 56 pounds! That's terrific.

Robin, if I do not eat tiny tiny bites, my food feels like it is stuck. At only 7 weeks out, soft foods were a god send to me. Protein is still hard for me to digest, but I eat tiny tiny bites and chew chew chew. Sometimes warm tea before you eat helps and also I use liquid ginger. It really helps with digestion. Good luck!
