Question about drain tube

My sister in law had gastric bypass surgery, lap, done on August 9th in Huntsville, Alabama. She is telling me that no one should go home with a drain tube. But, from what I have read on here most people do go home with a drain tube. She had hers out while in the hospital. Is there a difference in how long the tube has to stay in when you have open compared to lap? Thanks, Wanda

I think it's doctor preference. I had the NG tube (nose) the whole time I was in the hospital but never had the one in my tummy. Not sure about specifics but then again, each surgeon is different.

Wanda, It does differ from surgeon to surgeon, but with open you usually have your G-tube for 10 days-2 weeks post op. If you have complications, medication and/or nutrition can be administered through your tube directly into your old stomach. Good Luck, Erika L

I had the JP and G-Tubes. JP came out before discharge and I went home with the G-tube. It came out about 10 days later. No problem. I had lap RNY. luvitsunnyV@goal

Wanda, there are many types of tubes that you might have after surgery. If you are asking about a drain tube, this is a tube that allows fluid that has build up, to drain out. Not everyone who has open has one. My surgeon only does open and most of his patients don't get a drain tube. So it's best to check with your surgeon, to see if he normally uses them, and if he thinks you will need one. Good luck, Steve

Hey Wanda, I had Lap RNY and all tubes were out of me by the time I woke up from surgery. I guess it depends on the surgeon. Hugs, Christine 307/237/140ish
