Brenda, I'm glad you're home and doing well! I'm just ahead of you, so I know what you mean about being sore and the G-tube and drain being a bit of a pain. I don't miss the JP drain at all, but my G-tube has to stay in for several more weeks. It's not much fun, but at least I can stick my yucky tasting vitamins down it!! Welcome home!!! Jan

Congratulations Brenda, we are all happy you decided to wake up....lol. I always hear about the drain and the g-tube. What are those? Are those just for open RNY? My procedure was done Laparscopicly (sp?). Let me know! Hugs, Christine -70

All DR's do things differently. I had lap,too but those things were removed the second day for me. Kallen

Christine, my surgery was also lap, but Dr. Jawad is very cautious, so he leaves the JP drain in to drain yucky stuff from the abdominal cavity for a week. He puts in a G-tube (gastric tube) in the old stomach and leaves that for 5-6 weeks just in case we need it! It could save our lives! The G-tube comes in very handy for protein drinks we can't get in, or if we start to get dehydrated and can't keep up with water as a new post-op. It's also great for pills that can't be swallowed into the new pouch. If you do develop a stricture though, the G-tube would literally be the only way to get nourishment into you, and it could save your life. Hope that explanation makes sense! Jan

Jan, Ok now I am really confused about this G-tube. Are you saying that you can put pills and fluids into this tube and your old stomache digests it? I hate to sound dumb but this sounds a bit confusing. Thanks for the info Elaine

Elaine, the G-tube goes into the old stomach (or what's left of it). I can't put whole pills into the tube as they would get stuck, but if I crush them and dissolve them in fluid I can put them in the tube. I have some disgusting liquid vitamins I can't stand the taste of. Each morning I mix up my powdered calcium in some Carb Countdown fake milk and pour the gross liquid vitamins in too and mix it all up. I put the whole thing down the G-tube and I never have to taste that disgusting vile stuff! This will only work while I have the tube, of course, so I still have a vitamin issue to fix since I'll have to take them by mouth at some point. The old stomach still has the gastric juices going to it, so digestion does occur there and meets up with the new bypass down the line. I work in a nursing home and there are lots of older people who, because of strokes, etc., can't swallow anymore and they have G-tubes also. All their nutrition is put into the tube each day because they can't swallow and if they tried, they'd only get aspiration pneumonia and die! Jan
