Anybody know anything about Medicare requirements for RnY surgery?

My PCP told me something interesting today. He said that if Medicare will approve RnY surgery, and if I can find out what there requirements are, that if I meet those requirements, that my insurance company must approve regardless of whether there is an exclusion or additional rider required. Any one heard of this or know of where I can find those requirements? I know that the government is considering naming RnY as an accepted procedure for obesity... but have they already determined that it is?

I hate to tell you, but if there is an exclusion your insurance does NOT have to pay for it. Medicare is usually the trend setter for most other insurances.. so if they start or continue to cover it, then you may be able to pattition your insurance to cover it. http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2004pres/20040715.html That is the closest web site that I have found about Medicare coverage. It's not very specific, but I hope it helps. Brook
