Protein Shake Question
I guess I'm asking for both Pre-Op and post op. I bought Boost High Protein shakes yesterday to try in preparation for my Pre-Op Protein Diet. It doesn't taste bad at all but I'm wondering if it's ok or the surgeons are specifically asking for diet/weightloss shakes? How about Post-Op when you're still in the liquid diet stage...I would think that a Boost shake would be excellent nutrition but the added protein would be exactly what you're looking for. Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Danielle,
I havent tried Boost myself, but I would look at the sugar content. If it is not too high (less than 7g), it might be a protein shake that I would try. I know on my liquid diet after surgery, they said SF Carnation instant breakfast with a skim or LF milk and a scoop of dry LF milk was sufficient. The dry milk increases the protein count. Plus, that is affordable. During that phase, she said not to be concerned with carbs but now that I am further out, I look for shakes that are SF and low carb. Good question.

DUH
Ok, stupid me forgot about Post-Op Dumping. How stupid. Boost High Protein has 25 grams of sugar/33 grams of carbs in it!!!!!!!!!! Ok, so I had a serious brain fart. At any rate, ok, here's the deal...
it's probably not good for pre-op either considering all the carbs & sugar b/c the whole concept behind pre-op protein is HIGH protein, LOW carb, right? I'm hoping I have this straight-will check with surgeon's office whenever they call o finalize my date.
I have had the Atkin's shakes before I found them to be N-A-S-T-Y
I guess I'll have to check into Slim Fast...just stinks b/c there was so much more protein (15 grams) in the Boost High Protein than any other shake on the shelves at the store. I'll figure it out.

Hi Danielle-
Congrats on your upcoming surgery!
Protein shakes.......well lets just say that whatever you think you like now...you won't as a new post-op!! My reccomendation would be some Designer Whey, in the flavors you normally like.. It's not going to be easy, but add some Splenda and they are tolerable and now at 7 months post op I drink them all the time.
Atkins were also a good option since they are premade and no lumps....It was easy to open the can and sip on it throughout the day.
Just remember it's soooo worth it!!

I am still on liquid, going to liquid and pureed tomorrow. At first I had some issues with getting a protein shake. I had ordered stuff from Vitalady and it was delayed. Another problem is I was on percoset and wasn't thinking about the big picture. Anyways, I do 4 oz of protein shake 3 times per day...I bought a canned shake that was 11 oz, the protein content I liked, but duh, I was only drinking 4 oz at a time. I now have my vitalady stuff and my 4 oz gives me 22 grams of protein...I like that. I know I am atleast getting my 60 grams per day. I also add Splenda to the shakes...after 2 weeks I am still not sick of my 2 flavors I have.

Thanks for all the help guys. I finally did call and it is definitely LOW CARB (LOW SUGAR) HIGH PROTEIN. So my delicious Boost High Protein shakes are out. I will drink one a day for breakfast because I still have 3 weeks before I have to start the diet.
OOOHHHH, and by the way my surgery date is DEFINITELY Oct. 12. Pre-Op is Oct.7

Danielle, I'm not all that fussy (of course I'm still pre-op, so we'll see if that changes) but I am trying the Unjury powder to add to beverages I already like and the Nectar Roadside Lemonade powder also. I've also tried the Edge Low Carb drink thing that I found at Publix. I'm now on the liquid pre-op diet and I think I did ok today thus far.
Good luck!!
