I HAVE A FRIEND THAT IS HAVING SURGERY NEXT MONDAY. HER DOCTOR PUT HER ON A TWO WEEK LIQUID DIET SO THAT HER LIVER IS NOT ENLARGED WHEN DOING SURGERY. I NEVER HEARD OF THAT. HE TOLD HER IF HER LIVER IS TO BIG DURING SURGERY HE WOULD HAVE TO CUT HER. I THINK HE IS LAZY. MAYBE I AM WRONG BUT SHE IS GOING CRAZY CAN ANYONE ENLIGHTEN ME ON WHY HE IS DOING THAT. THE GIRL JUST WANTS TO EAT A SANDWICH. SHE IS ALREADY GOING TO BE HAVING SURGERY AND EATING IS NOT GOING TO BE HER FRIEND ANYMORE SO WHY MAKE HER GO THROUGH THAT? HELP MY FRIEND DEBBIE UNDERSTAND ALONG WITH ME UNDERSTANDING.....

Antoinette, Many doctor's require this to reduce the part of the liver that could get in the way of the surgery. It isnt because the surgeon is lazy but a precautionary measure. Tell your friend to suck it up (no offense) and do the liquid diet as her surgeon requested. It will just put her further ahead in losing than those who eat and eat and eat up until surgery. I actually wish my surgeon had more specific restrictions prior to surgery because I gained almost 10 lbs eating lots of "last suppers" those last few weeks. I know it isnt easy, but after surgery, it isnt easy either. Unfortunately, we still have to deal with head hunger, cravings and temptations. I would love to have a sandwich too now at 11 weeks out, but that just isnt something I can have because I would get sick and then regret my decision. Remind your friend that "nothing tastes as good as thin feels". She can do this, plus after those two weeks are over, she will feel so proud that she accomplished that. Good luck to her Amy

I THINK THAT WAS MEAN BUT THAT IS YOUR OPINION. SHE IS GOING THROUGH SOMETHING AND I WISH YOU COULD BE MORE SENSITIVE TO PEOPLE GOING THROUGH SOMETHING LIKE THAT. YOUR DOCTOR DID NOT MAKE YOU DO IT AND YOU GAINED BUT ALL THE GIRL IS ASKING FOR A SOME MEAT. FOR GOD SAKE

I agree with Amy. I also gained 10 lbs before surgery saying good bye to food...lol. I wish I had lost some weight before. It is better to go through the no bread withdrawals now. I was kind of depressed right after surgery but now I don't miss it. She will be that much ahead of the rest of us. Hope this helps. Christine 307/255/140

Hello all I am the friend Toni speaking about and I am sucking it up. It's not easy and I am sticking to what my doctor say. Thanks Toni for showing such great concern for my hunger pains and thank you all for inputting in. I am sticking to the plan I am doing shakes which my friend Toni gave me a head start on with donating to the cause I am drinking crystal light and sipping on some chicken broth So I am hanging in there I am scheduled for Monday and I am truly looking forward to crossing over on the losing side. Ladies keep me in your prayers for the detoxing of food that I am going through and surgery that is upcoming. Thanks again - Debbie aka "Black Diamond"

Debbie, Wow, I think I might have gotten my first flaming on here. I apologize if my post seemed insensitive, that was not my intent at all, just more of me being a smartass than being mean. Sorry about that This isn't an easy journey for any of us...before or after surgery. In my opinion, you dont want to "break the rules" early in the game or you set yourself up for a trend of doing that. I figure until I become a bariatric surgeon , they probably know what's best for their patients. I am so glad that you posted so we can support you as you travel through the process. Monday will be here before you know it and you will cross over to the losing side. Keep sucking down your Crystal Light and other liquids, you will appreciate it that first time you get on the scale after surgery. Best wishes for a successful surgery and Good luck! Amy

I'm a patient of Cleveland Clinic, also. I have Dr. Rosenthal and he also puts some people on a two week liquid diet. I am one of the "light weights" , as they call it, and have been dieting and exercising since January when I started my journey. I have loss 25 lbs so far. I did it to get a jump start on losing and be in better condition for my surgery. I have my pre-op appointment this Friday (20th) and will let you know if Dr. Rosenthal is still going to require me to do the liquid diet for two weeks. My surgery is Sept 9th. You have my prayers for a safe surgery and fast recovery!
