Hiccups anyone?

Hey Everyone!! I had my surgery on the 4th and I remember one of the residents making the comment about not hiccuping. Of course I was still drugged, so I don't remember the exact comment. The other day at home, I had a couple of hiccups. So I called Kim, my angel, who said she couldn't remember if there was a reason not to hiccup. Well this got to eating at me so I called Susan at Dr. Murr's office. And she reassured me that hiccuping was normal and the doctor was most likely teasing. Well last night and tonite I have had a couple of hiccups. So I decided to read the info in the OH library. I am not sure if this a good thing. While reading the info, someone had posted there that their doctor told them hiccups and back pain usually meant a leak. Well, I have occassional hiccups and my back is sore. However I think this from having to sleep on it instead of my tummy, because the soreness does go away during the day. So had anyone had the hiccups?? They're not painful and not even really noisy. I just 2-4 little hiccups. Thanks, Karee

Hi Karee! The best indicator of a leak is rapid heartbeat with a fever. I know it sounds strange, but some post-ops get hiccups, sneezes or a runny nose when their pouch is full. I've been sneezing! Usually 3 times in a row, which never happened before surgery. Hugs, Erika L

Thanks Erika!! I never knew the best indicator of a leak was a rapid heartbeat with a fever. That explains why in the hospital when my heart would speed up that the doctors would run my more tests. Good thing for me that they recognized a patteren.. that my heart rate went up when I was left alone in the hospital all night. Thanks for the answer about the hiccups. I just do not want any complications. Karee

Karee, I had my surgery on April 9, 2004, and ever since surgery, if I eat to much, I get the hiccups. It's sort of my body's way of telling me not to eat so much next time. It does not hurt anything, it dosen't mean I have a leak, it just means I ate to much. Next time it happens to you, review what you ate, how much you ate and how fast you ate, it's probably just your body trying to warn you.

I get one hiccup when I am full and at times will get the random series of a few sneezes too. It is strange but I guess a built-in regulator. I just laugh about it , trust me, you're normal Amy

Karee, Hi! I hope you are feeling good! I don't know to much about hiccups. I don't get them very often. I don't remember hearing though that hiccups are an indication of a leak. MICHELLE
