My Surgery Story... I am finally post-op
Hi everyone!! I am going stir crazy and decided to post about my surgery. So here goes..
We got to the hospital at 5:30am on the 4th. We had to wait a few mins for admissions to open and then things seemed to move right along. I was sent to the surgical waiting on the 2nd floor. And within 10 mins I was back in my little room. Jose came in to see me and go over everything. I absolutely adore Jose. The nurse came in about 6:30am and gave me a heparin shot and told me that she'd be back with a Xanax. Well she never came back. And yanno.. I didn't feel all that nervous.
About fifteen minutes later, the lady came to wheel me to the holding area. Which was an area of mass confusion and noise. I met Dr. Kitzner my anethsiologist there. Who decided to insert the iv into the same arm they put the blood thinner in. Can you say erupting volcano of blood coming from my arm!! Then the nurses came to check to see if I was who I am.
Fifteen minutes later I was wheeled to the OR. The nurses kept asking if I was sleepy yet. And I wasn't. I was carrying on coversations with them and the doctors. And I remember everything! I was even awake when they strapped my arms and legs down. It was shortly after that they finally knocked me out.
I woke up after sugery when they were trying to move me back onto the stretcher. I was freaking out because of the tremendous amout of pain. In the recovery room it took 1-2 hours before my pain was finally controlled. And I ended up being in the RR for almost 9hrs do to a disagreement with the RR nurse and the 8th nurse who kept claiming for 7hrs that I had a room but it wasn't clean.
When the doctor's finally came to see me, they explained that the first thing Dr. Murr did was take my liver biopsy and discovered that I had scarring on my liver. Which turned my long bypass into a shorter bypass. If you have any liver damage and have a long bypass apparently it can cause liver failure when you looses excessive amounts of weight at one time.
I had a few small problems once on the 8th floor. My heart would race between 124-135. And when this would happen I would get a temp that ranged from 100-101.3. Well, they finally decided that was from anxiety. Once my husband stayed the night it stopped.
However Dr. Murr decided to do an extra leak test and abodminal xray to be on the safe side. They found that I had gas around my incision that should be passing. So thanks to Marla's advice I got a cup of hot tea and sipped on it. Not only did I pass gas with in the hour, I started having hourly bowel movements. Which apparently made the doctors estactic.
I finally came home on Sunday afternoon. Before I left, I asked to be weighted and I had already lost 5lbs. I've been doing good. Decided I was going shopping at WalMart and I regret that. It was to hard on my body.
I've either talked to or seen Kim every day since my surgery. She tells me I am doing wonderful!!
