nausea!!
Please help! I'm 4 and 1/2 weeks out from surgery and after having a 10 day bout with nausea, I felt better for about a week. Now, it's back. The doctor's office told me to drink more water. I'm up to at least 9 or 10 glasses a day, but that's not making a difference. I'm going to call again today, but until they open, does anyone have any suggestions?
Laura
Also, I had nausea in the hospital and they gave me something in the IV. I asked the resident (I've only seen my surgeon two times, for about 30 seconds each, throughout the last 5 months) who discharged me about it. He said I needed to deal with it. I called again, when I got home, and he said that he'd never heard of a gastric bypass patient who had a problem with nausea and that there wasn't anything he could do for me. Just so you know what I'm dealing with!!!
Laura,
Hi there!
I know how you feel!
I hate nausea!
I am now 19days out and have dealt with it a few times myself. The only advice I have is perhaps try to eat a lot slower and chew, chew, chew. I know everyone is probably telling you this and/or this is something you already do. :-l
I just hope you start to feel better soon and demand some answers from that surgeon! What kind of surgeon never heard of naseau in a gastric bypass patient.........hmmmm

Hi Laura, sorry to hear about your nausea. I get nausious when I smell certian things or look at certian foods. I just drink water and try not to think about it. Hopefully your doctor's office can help. Do you go to a support group meeting? If not, let me know if you are interested and you can come to mine. Hope to talk to you soon,
Christine

It's usually PHENERGAN they give you in IV for nausea, but it is prescription and you would need to ask your DR. about that. I hate being nauseous myself, I feel for ya, I was like that my entire pregnancy and let me tell you... it gets OLD, fast... Hope you feel better and I hope your DR. becomes more sympathetic to your needs.

I'm confused. Your surgeon never heard of nausea with bypass patients, or the resident never heard of it?? If it was the resident I would have HAD to have asked "Are you NEW??" Does your surgeon have a nurse or someone else that works with him that can get a message to him about your nausea? Or maybe you should just show up in the doctor's office and feel free to hurl in the waiting room. That way the resident could get a first hand education on nausea in bypass patients. I'd think he'd be grateful for the education!!!
Seriously, maybe your PCP could order you something?? I hope your poor pouch settles down soon!!

Who the hell was your surgeon? And the snot nosed resident never heard of nausea in Gastric Bypass Patients....
What hospital were you at?
You REALLY need to call somebody...to have nausea for that long is NOT normal. Your body is trying to tell you something...maybe that your Doctor is an ASS!

Laura I have not post op as yet but I am a long time sufferer of nausea. There are so many drugs to help with this. Zofran is one that works for me. Phenergan, Reglan not bad but Compazine, didn't do a think. I had to get a pre approved authorization for Zofran since its very expensive but my insurance treats me very good...makes me jump though hoops only to say yes every time. If you surgeon doesn't help call your PCM.
Thanks everyone for the responses. I had a terrible night last night with the nausea, but I feel better today. One of you had asked where I went. I was at Cleveland Clinic in Weston with Dr. Rosenthal. He was really bad and I wouldn't recommend him to anyone, but it wasn't him who said he'd never heard of nausea in a bypass patient. That was one of his many residents.
As far as medicine, they won't give me anything. They just told me to drink more water and yesterday said to try some peppermint tea. That just about put me over the edge last night, so I won't be doing that again!!! I did get some suppositories, I think it starts with phene or something like that, from my roommate's sister, who is a nurse. They only made it worse.
It doesn't matter what I eat or if I eat at all. If I'm in nausea mode, then I just am. I'm being VERY careful with what I'm eating and how I'm eating it. I just think my stomach needs to heal more.......well, I guess. :/
