ARE YOU ALL ASLEEP???
Good morning Florida. I have checked on this board several times this morning and it looks like all are either asleep or maybe out. Hope everyone is having a great Sunday.
I have a question..........Since the first few days post-op are slow and looks like most just ge****er down, the mouth must feel and taste pretty crummy. What about SF mints or chewing gum? Seems that would help keep your mouth froming being dry and also help with the nausea (peppermint) Anyone have thoughts on that?
thanks
Carol

Hi Carol,
The weekends around here are usually pretty slow, sometimes I think I am posting to myself
Are you referring to the post op time while you are still in the hospital or after you get home? In the hospital, I wasnt allowed ANYTHING except swabs of water and cough drops until I passed the leak test which didnt come until the third morning, then I was given a choice of certain things (cream of chicken soup, jello, crystal light, etc) the nutritionist had cleared for me. Flavored chapstick was the best thing for me while I was riding out that time for my leak test, I thought of it as my "dessert" LOL. I wasnt hungry at all, but I was dying of thirst and couldnt wait until I could have something besides a swab. They brought me some crystal light lemonade and it was wayyyy too sweet. I preferred the water, but remember you have to take a very long time to eat and drink when you are first out, so try not to gulp. Once you get home, you should have a pretty restricitive diet to follow for a while from your doctor.
The gum thing is controversial, some doctors say never chew gum for fear that it might accidentally get swallowed, create havoc and take up space in our small pouches, other doctors dont care. I mean, how often does an adult really swallow gum???? I don't chew gum but I do like SF mints and breathe strips and I think I tried them about a week out. Good question.

I chewed gum while I was in the hospital. I had ice chips as soon as I wanted them as Dr. Dietrick does the leak test twice while you are still in the OR.
The Trident sugar free spearmint was great at keeping my mouth moist. I always stayed very alert to it tho, so I wouldn't swallow too much and swallow the gum itself.
I still chew it after taking my meds (crushed and mixed with something) to get rid of the awful numbing taste.
