Hi! I am new to the board and am pre-op. I had my first visit with the nutritionist today and she scared me. She is telling me to drink juice the first day home from the hospital. Also I need to know what protein drink to buy since I cough everytime I drink milk products. I wanted to try the Fuzzy navel nectar but it is made with whey. Please help? Thanks

My nutritionist said that during the first two weeks we could have no sugar added juice too. Keep in mind, you arent going to be drinking a lot of it. We were allowed to drank 4oz. of apple juice once a day as part of a meal (with 4oz of another allowed food). I have determined since surgery that I am now lactose intolerant which I didnt suffer from before, the nutritionist said this happens quite often after surgery. Are you sure that whey products will make you cough? I do OK with the protein drinks if I make them with soy milk. I use choc soy in the choc shake mix and vanilla in the banana mix and they taste pretty good. I found single serving sizes of soy at the grocery store so I could "test" them first. I am still a little hesitant about trying the non-flavored soy milk (afraid it wont taste very good). I know there are some protein shakes not made with whey, you may want to talk to some one at GNC or a health food store for suggestions then see if you can order samples online. Good luck!

Bonnie, there are a lot of good protein drinks that can be made with water. There are also some verygood milk substitutes that you may try, Carb Countdown by Hood dairy is one of them. Good luck.

Bonnie, If I remember correctly, whey protein is a form of dairy and I assume this is why you are apprehensive about trying it. From all that I have learned soy protein can cause severe gas, which in turn can cause a lot of pain. I know several people that are lactose intolerant but are able to drink whey protein. Rather than go out and buy a $40 tub of protein that you may not be able to use, try ordering some samples. I ordered several over the internet. My favorite, I got from www.bariatriceating.com and it is called Proplete Gold Double Chocolate Ice Cream. I mix it with water, not milk and I think it tastes terrific. I've heard that the nectar is pretty gross, but everyone has their own opinion. I have a couple of samples of it but I just haven't tried it yet. I'm still preop but I am working on finding and trying everything I can now in order to make the transition easier later. Hey, I even gave up my caffeine and soft drinks in April and don't plan on having surgery until September or October. Good luck to you. Terri Pratt
