Curves
Can anyone tell me about Curves? I am ready to join something but I dont know much about them. The website wasnt very helpful. Are they considered circuit training or a regular gym?
For instance, can I just walk in and do the treadmill for an hour or are they more focused on using a series of equipment? Just curious and not willing to walk in there yet until I know more because I know I'll get suckered into a membership (been there...), do you see the bullseye on my forehead? LOL

Hi Amy,
I joined curves for a while about 2 years ago. It is very good for people who aren't already exercising. If you are a beginner (or way out of shape) this is the thing for you. It is a circuit and you do 30 seconds of a machine and then 30 seconds of aerobics (stepping in place, or whatever), then on to the next machine, etc. It is a 30 minute program. It does combine strength and aerobics -- so that is a major plus.
It is great for getting started, but after a period of time you will need to move up to a more aggressive program. I would guess 6-9 months if you are currently out of shape. Plus, it is fun and the time goes quickly as you can gab with all the other women that are there.
I stopped because I felt I needed more. Of course, I didn't stick with my own program, so I would have been better off staying with Curves. Oh well, live and learn.
Good luck,
Karen
Amy, what happened with you and Curves?? I was going to suggest you ask them if there's a way they can waive their initial fee because sometimes there is. I hate those initial fees. We don't charge them when we bring people into the nursing home and let me tell you, we have a TON of paperwork to do. I may join Curves for a short period of time post-op until I've lost enough that I can go to a regular gym. I like the idea of short and sweet exercise sessions.
Jan,
I think I am going to join a smaller gym in my neighborhood that is only $30/mo and no contracts. Plus, it is right next door to the Aquatic Center where I can swim laps in the morning. I decided that I really want the flexibility and diversity of a regular gym versus the structure of Curves. Plus, their hours are really wacky at the two Curves around here. The fees didnt bother me as much as the fact that I know I would get bored with their "routine". There is a gym at my job too, but I really dont feel like working out with people I work with yet. Although I love the two girls who run it and know they would be so supportive of my progress. That is probably more of a long term goal for me since they hold all kinds of classes (yoga, pilates, aerobics, etc) and have all kinds of equipment. I need to start something soon since I just had my one month anniversary and cant put it off much longer

Amy, it sounds like you made an excellent decision for yourself. I like the idea of no contracts too and I wish there was a place where I could swim laps. I don't mind getting out of breath when I'm exercising as much as I hate sweating like a pig and I don't sweat in the water!! I'd go to the local Y here but I think it's pretty pricey and there's a hefty initial fee as I recall. Oh well, I'll think of something after my surgery. Just a few more weeks before we go for approval.
