I am pre-op RNY and was wondering how much time is required in the hospital and then for recovery?

Anita: I don't have my surgery until later this month, but everything I've learned indicates that with a lap you will be in the hospital 3-4 days. Those with open 4-5. Of course, that's without complications. Recovery really varies. A person with a lap RNY is probably back to work in a couple of weeks. An open, usually, requires a little longer. That's what really varies...like each doctor is different and so is the length of the incision. What you do for a living makes a big difference. No matter which procedure you should still avoid lifting anything over 20 lbs for six weeks. Bottom line is that self employed folks seem to go back to work sooner. Joe in Clearwater.

My surgery was event free. My dh and I went in on a Tues and Came out on a Friday. I went back to work part time at three weeks. Full time 4 weeks. He took 6 weeks. We both had open.

Hi Anita, I had my RNY on wed July 9th and went home at 8pm the next day. It is getting better to get around andup and down.. I'm still very sore and take things easy. I was blessed at my surgery was to be open and the Doc was able to do it lap. It took 3 1/4 hours due to adhesions, but I'm not near as sore nor will it take me as long to heal. Lots of love to all...Brenda from Apopka
