Celebration Hospital - Dr. Keith Kim
Hello all - I'm a newbie here and to WLS. I am contemplating having the gastric bypass done by Dr. Keith Kim at Celebration Hospital, Florida. I have already attended 3 initial meetings - once with my husband, once for myself, and once with a friend. I am planning on going to the General Support group meeting this Wed. 4/8/09. I was wondering if there are any of Dr. Kim's patients on this board, as I would like to get your thoughts about treating with Dr. Kim and Celebration Hospital.
Thanks,
Lorraine (Minneola, FL)

HI Lorraine
I am just starting my journey with Dr Kim as well.
I have been to the meetings with my husband and will be attending the general meeting myself with my husband and daughter on Wednesday as well.
I have done all my pre surgery preparations and am now waiting for the phone call to schedule my surgery date.
Maybe I will see you there.
Carrie

Hi Carrie - so you are pretty close to your date. I started my doctor supervised six-month diet for the insurance about 3 weeks ago and so I'm figuring my surgery won't be until Feb/March. We're not sure if my husband will be able to go through with it. He's having some heart problems and is having an electrical study on 07/13 with a possible implanted defibrillator, so we'll have to wait and see on him. He did start his diet just in case in six months, he is able to go forward.
I'll try to seek you out and introduce myself on Wed.

Another newbie as well considering Dr. Kim. I have my first appt on 7/21 with the nutritionist and Dr. Ferguson. I haven't been to one of the support groups yet b/c I live in Winter Park and the timing hasn't been good for me. Hoping to make one soon.
I, too, would like to hear more about Dr. Kim.
Thanks.

Hi there,
I had surgery with Dr. Kim on June 15. I have nothing but good things to say about Dr. Kim and his staff. They are wonderful! The entire process was handled very professionally. The office has dealt with every insurance under the sun and know all the ins and outs of their rules. They are experienced in dealing with the different concerns that individuals may have. I love going to the support group meetings. Dr. Kim leads them and there is always a wealth of knowledge being shared.
The hospital itself is the nicest facility I've every been in. Every room is private and they have a specialized bariatrics unit. The nurses there are trained to handle the "barry" patients. In fact, I go to Celebration Hospital for all my care now. They are second to none.
Dr. Ferguson, the shrink, had weight loss surgery herself about 7-8 years ago. She is a fantastic inspiration. Good luck to you!

Hi there,
I'm also a patient of Dr Kim's - and have been extremely happy with him. I had RNY on 12/1/08 and have had zero complications or problems. Dr Kim and his team know their stuff, are highly professional and handled all the insurance/paperwork with no dramas.
The hospital was great - I did have an issue with two of the nurses on duty while I was in the hospital - but (to be honest) I'm not the world's greatest patient When I'm in pain I tend to be impatient. All I can say is that if you have a problem (which you shouldn't) speak up and it will get resolved.
Dr Kim himself is my type of surgeon - he's all about the science. He researches, he has the stats, if you have questions, he'll give you the science based answer (mind you - this is not always what you'll want to hear, but it's the truth). In my experience, he's not a "warm fuzzies" guy - he's nice, respectful and professional but firm - and will give you the facts straight up. He doesn't sugarcoat things, he has a well designed, well researched program and will expect you to follow "the rules". He has regular after surgery support (which is crucial) - he doesn't just do the operation and leave you on your own afterwards.
In my opinion, you couldn't find a better surgeon or program.
Best of luck with your journey!

Thanks for sharing. I'm glad I attended the meetings and support group. I plan on going to all the General Support ones that I can. I was really surprised that he actually conducted the meeting. I enjoy listening to him. I do medical transcription for a living and he talks right up my alley. I love research, stats, etc. I'm so glad I found him.
Sounds like you've had a pretty nice journey yourself.

I looked for you at the last meeting but there was so many people there.
I have been very impressed with Dr Kim and his staff.
I started the fluid diet today for my surgery on the 27th.
I am plowing through all the online information and little tests they gave me. I have to admit I am not doing so well on my nutrition test. Never was one for exams.
Good luck
Carrie
