Only you can decide which surgery is right for you.  You need to research all of the surgeries that are currently being done.  Those surgeries would be the DS, RNY, VSG and lap band.  If your surgeon does not do all of the surgeries don't expect him to have anything good to say about the surgeries he/she does not do.

I am pretty partial to the DS.  It is a good fit for me and I have been very successful.  The stats with the DS are very good for not only getting the weight off but keeping it off.  I have some journal articles I would be happy to send you if you will PM me with your email address.

I went with the VSG.  Here is the simple way to decide..  I don't have a sweet tooth so the RNY was not the best fit for me. I have a palet and like a range of things but I am an over eater. With the VSG your stomach is smaller and you can not over eat.  There is no switch or bypass. I can digest as I did before. Just can not put away like before.

Will I lose and keep it off the answer is yes. THis is my life change.   The standard for WLS soon will be the VSG, RNY and the Band....

Band is a life long list of DR's visits.
RNY I don't like the Idea of re plumbing things
VSG Stomach is made smaller, so you eat less.  Only vitamin I will have to take is a Multi and Calcium.  Low complication rate

Good luck and reseach for yourself. I spent  endless hours over 6 months deciding on mine. It's your deciision not the DR's or anyone here.. Read and ask questions.

I hate to put this way, but unless you are going to self pay, first check and see what procedures your insurance will cover.  After you have a list of what they will cover, then do some intense research on each and every one.  Make a list of your eating habits, do you eat a lot in one sitting, are sweets a big thing for you, do you eat real fatty foods?  Research, research, research,  what procedures do your local surgeons do?  Are you willing to travel for a procedure they don't do local?  How much time can you take off work?  Ask yourself every question you can think of and then honestly answer everyone before you make a decision.  Ask people you know and trust who have had WLS the pros and cons of their surgery.  anyone who only tells you the good things, and says there are no cons, don't listen to them, you want honesty.

Good luck,

Steve

This is my big question too. I'm brand new at this and really don't know much about any of them, but I keep hearing that the Lap band isn't as effective as the RNY. This is my only shot and I have to do it right. I understand that the LAP is the least invasive and the least expensive, which is all great, but how does it compare when it comes to losing large amounts of weight. I need to drop at least 220. My insurance (Medicare) covers RNY, LAP and Biliopancreatic w/duodenal switch.

Dr. Seiloff has seminars that are REALLY helpful, he requires them. He answers any and all questions you might have. He's got one for RNY and a seperate one for the Band. I would go to his seminar and get all the info you can.
