Dr. Todd Overcash?

I had a call from Dr. O's office on Thursday and I asked if he was leaving.  I was told no and I mentioned that I had heard he was touring a facility in NC and what was up.  I was told that he was up there to do some teaching and also do a speak to a group.  Also, they did tell me that Dr. O has taken a break from surgery but it wasn't a permanent break.

So, it is true that he is not doing surgery right now.  They didn't mention why.  Maybe he is having medical problems again?

And, at least in the next month, he isn't going anywhere - I have an appointment with him in mid-Feb.

Thanks for the update.  Glad he isn't leaving you high & dry for your appt next month!  That would rot.  Hope he isn't ill.  I'm sure surgeons would prefer to operate than take time away from it.

I am new to this forum and it will be my first post..................thanks for all of the great info that everybody contributes. Dr. Overcash did take a 2 month leave of absence and had his hospital priveleges at Munroe Regional Medical Center restored on 1/23/09. I had RNYGB 8/2001 and it has failed. I am planning on a revision with Dr. Overcash. I had my first appt in Oct and my insurance company denied a revision. Dr. Overcash appealed it and got an approval. His staff is wonderful to work with and very patient. I faxed a list of questions to his office and within an hour he called me back personally. He has always advised me to really think about my decision and to not jump into anything. He is not pushy about having surgery. Flat personality but I've heard there is a sense of humor somewhere in there. I work in this medical community so I have had the opportunity to ask a lot of people about him. For the most part it hasbeen positive in regards to his skills.
PS.....he's from NC and went to school there.

I personally talked to Dr. O when I went there with my sister a few weeks ago. He did tour the NC facility and he decided not to go anywhere because of personal reasons.  He is not taking a break due to medical issues but private reasons.  So just bare with him.  He has lost a lot of weight himself and has a totally different attitude from 3 months ago.  I also confronted him (I usually say what's on my mind) about his personality has changed -- and I may say it is for the better.  He has had BIG, HUGE, medically problems in the past but that has improved 500%.

So he seems like a different person now compared to 3 months ago.

One person on his staff that takes care of insurance for him was not a nice person to me when I asked about my insurance after Dr. O agreed with me to take my out-of-network insurance. This lady was rude and she argued with me and I told her about what Dr. O said and she wanted no part of taking my insurance but had to agree. I have an appointment already set up with Dr. Renhke in St. Petersburg, so I am just going to go through him since he does accept my insurance and it is not off-network, so less pay for me.

So my attitude of Dr. O has changed.

I also find out that he does the distal surgery where Dr. Renhke does the proximal surgery.  For people who want to know what the difference is, check out this article:

I  had a proximal RNYGB 8/2001and have failed horribly. Yesterday I found out that I have a surgery date for a revision with Dr. Overcash on 2/25/09..........very nervous and excited. He was very up front and answered all of my questions. He has confidence that this revision will be a success. Has anybody else had a revision?

What made you fail? Old eating habits? Just courious. I looked at studies comparing the proimal and distal; they conclided that they could find no difference in weight loss or keeping the weight off. I know a lot of people go in for revisions. My sister is a year out and she sometimesstrugles with her head hunger.

It started out as an injury that prevented me from exercising for 6 weeks and eventually experimenting with old habits......particularly  grazing and drinking with meals. Prior to my injury I followed the "rules" to a "T". My pouch is OK but the opening and outlet are too large to hold the food in long enough for me to maintain that full feeling. Dr O also said that I did not have enough intestine bypassed for my procedure to be fully effective. Based on my prior surgical report, never reaching goal weight, and weight gain Dr O felt that I would have never been fully sucessful. What kind of results have your friends had with revisions? Why did they have them?

I know the feeling. I was injured in a car accident in 1991 and 1998. After the 1991 accident, I gained a lot of weight. Now I am to the point of moving on and have a ton of weight to lose so that is why I chose RNY to get healthy and lose weight to live longer.

My sister had open RNY, not a revision with Dr. Overcash. She is doing okay now, with just problems they call 'head hunger.' I hope she knows when to pay attention if she starts to gain weight.

I have always been thin. I am 5'7" with my normal weight of about 135. Due to the car accidents, since 1991, neck and back injuries caused me to not move a lot and no exercise, so I gained weight and have many health problems. I weight now about 282.

Good luck with your revision. I am sure Dr. Overcash will take really good care of you.
