I think someone posted that he was on a leave of absence or something.  Are you going to have surgery with him?

No, I am 21 months postop lap RNY by Dr. Roc Bauman in Concord, NC and couldn't be happier!  But Dr. Overcash was here in NC touring my facility yesterday (I'm a nurse on a bariatric unit in a COE), and I was asked about him and had never heard of him.  I figured someone here would know of him.

Hi..Dr. Overcash did my surgery 4 years old and the best thing I ever did...he is a GREAT surgeon, very very skilled but has a bit of an attitude and he is tough as nails in your followup care which he does for about a year at no cost to you...which is great!! But as I said...he is TOUGH as nails..so be prepared many people can take offense to his methods...however the ratio for people keeping the weight off many years into the future from him is high..or so some say. Look up under surgeons and see  his testimonials. However, as Red stated he may be on leave or just finishing up. His office number is (352) 368-2828 if you need to check. Best of luck to you!

My sister had WLS with Overcash in Feb. 2008. I hear he is a good surgeon but his bedside manner is non-existent.  I went to every doctor's visit with my sister plus was at the hospital. At the office, he is really stern, direct to the point, says it like it is, and if you do not lose the weight he wants you to lose, then he lets you know.  he was not doing any surgeries when i called in dec. 2008. My sister has a follow-up appointment with him on Friday.   She doesn't really care for him too much. but hey, I hear he is a great surgeon, and lots of people go to him. I'm driving to St. Petersberg for mine with Dr. Rehnke. I like him better and he really seems to care about his patients.  I also looked at Overcash in the myflorida.org directory and didn't like his past practices. but, Overcash does have a lot of patience still.

Thanks.  I had my surgery with a surgeon who also didn't have (doesn't have) a great touchy-feely, friendly bedside manner.  However, he has great stats and reputation and that was what I was after.  He's very rigid and inflexible with his program and followup, and that's great.  It'd be nice if he was friendlier, but I wasn't after that - I wanted to live to enjoy my weight loss, know what I mean?  His partner was extremely friendly, personable, and also inflexible and rigid, also with a great reputation and stats.  So it is do-able, but Dr. Bauman isn't like that.

I was curious about Dr. Overcash because he was recently touring my unit ( I work on a bariatric surgical unit in NC), as if he was interviewing for a position here.  The nurses got a weird vibe from him and I just wondered if anyone here knew of him.

I guess that is the most important when looking for a WLS surgeon - that he or she is a great one. My sister though wishes she had one that would support her in her weight loss - like when she did lose weight and not in his 'target' range, he should have praised that part but instead, he told her she was eating too much, which she wasn't. People lose weight at different rates, but he never praised her for anything, just told her he was unhappy with her WL.  His personality is about the same as a brick wall, and he has had some problems in the past with his surgeries that prompted court cases.  But, a lot of people go to him. I was thinking of going to him but the one person I talked to inhisoffice was snotty, so I chose to drive 2 1/2 hours to a doctor that cares, than to drive 1 hour to one who doesn't.

He may be hunting for a job else where. I know he took a leave of absence for awhile. Maybe that is why, he was trying to find some other place. my sister has an appointment on Friday which I will go too and I will see if i hear anything.   The nurses are correct to get weird vibes - it's his personality.

Dr. Overcash did take some time off for medical reasons last year but he was back by mid-2008.  My friend used him for a revision in July and I used him for an RNY in September.

He has NO bedside manner and is very hurried with you BUT I would use him again in a NY minute.  I had no issues with my surgery and am very happy with the results.  He has a great history of success.

My friend said that he is nasty to her at her follow ups because he doesn't think she has done as well as should could be doing.  I've never had a problem with my follow ups.  While I feel somewhat rushed, he has not complained at all about the amount of weight I've lost, etc.

Dr. Overcash's staff is great to work with.  They appear to really know what they are doing and are very helpful.

I was on the edge on whether I would get an approval.  My BMI was slightly over 35.  I do have several co-morbidities.  Dr. Overcash was worried that I would not get approved though.  Well...whatever his staff sent forward, worked.  I went for my first visit on a Friday - I had my approval the following Friday.  I could have had surgery within 2 weeks if I wanted (I couldn't for work reasons).  He didn't make me go through hoops.

I would highly recommend your using him - go with the great stats and just ignore the lack of friendliness.  While it may be nice to have both, the important factor is that he is highly skilled.

If you want any more info, please feel free to email me.

I'm an RNY success story and not in need of a surgeon -- but glad you feel so strongly that you'd recommend him.  I had a great one myself, too, and would definitely recommend him, as well.  I think it's important that we choose a surgeon we're that comfortable with, even after the surgery.  The bedside manner is not what you need as long as they know what they're doing and take care of you.  Congratulations on your success.

Dr. Overcash performed my DS 11/2007 and I think he is a great surgeon. He doesn't do many DSes as other surgeons but, I can tell you from my own experience, my DS is very successful. I do not have the experience that many have had with him with his bedside manner. Maybe part of it is that I had a wound infection in the beginning so he was gentle with me. Maybe it's because my DH always went with me to my follow-up appointments and he and Dr O seemed to have stuff in common. Or maybe he was happy with my weight-loss. Whatever the reason I like him very much and would use him again.
