I am having Gastric Bypass Surgery in Jan and I have been doing a lot of reading!  Can someone please tell me how bad the hair loss really is?  My hair is pretty thin to begin with, will it all fall out?  Thanks for any help!!

Start taking Biotin with 50 mg of Zinc NOW! And you shouldn't have much of any problems.
(No more than 50mg of the Zinc though as it can burn the insides of your stomach.) The zinc helps the body absorb the Biotin. Your nails (which is really hair) will grow faster too.

It's different for everybody but my hair did get thin. I have pretty fine hair and was horrified that I could see my scalp through those little hairs.  My hairdresser said she noticed new growth this week so hopefully it's on it's way back.  I took biotin,  folic acid and ate plenty of protein and was unable to skip this crappy step in the journey.  The one bright spot? My nails look fabulous!

Just reached this milestone....15 weeks out and I am shedding like a snake. At any rate I take the Biotin 5000mcg daily and I look less in the mirror at my thinning hair The zinc killed my pouch. I can't eat meat yet due to vomitting and pain. So i finally found a protein supplement that my intestines can tolerate without dumping. I am thankful that I found someone else with the same problem. Only 30% of bypass patients lose their hair. Guess we are the lucky ones? Keep smiling!!

I am 7 1/2 weeks out and I did have a lot of hair loss.  When I went to my hair dresser the last time (4-5 wks ago) she said she saw hair growth.  Unfortunately, I did not take any Biotin, but am using Rogain now (dr's suggestion) and my hair is growing in.  I did have a lot of hair and actually could use a little thinning, but not as much as I had.  It started around month 3 and lasted about 3 mos.  Good luck on your new journey.  God Bless

my hair loss on my head is pretty extensive. luckily i started with reasonably thick hair. I don't want to do the biotin b/c i am getting laser tx on facial hair and don't want to undo that work. i got full vitamins and protein by 2 weeks postop which is supposedly pretty good. good luck to ya

My hair got pretty thin from months four to seven.  On the bright side, my waist got pretty thin too!

It is one more step in the process.

I did lose a lot of hair too, but I also started with lots of hair. My hairdresser said it was not too bad but I noticed everytime I washed my hair..I wanted to cry but I increased my protein intake, took biotin and prayed a lot..lol but thank God it stopped after a few months...I did not get to buy any wigs..lol but protein intake made a difference for me I think.
