Hi, everyone!
New member here, VSG scheduled for October 20 with Dr. Gagner. My BMI is 37, and my main reason for surgery is that I am hoping for remission from Type II DM. Currently on oral meds. Also extremely hypertensive, reflux, joint pain.

Although I must say I have been in my closet stroking those clothes that haven't fit me in 10 years... hoping to be able to get rid of those, too, LOL!

I have 80 lbs to be at goal... hopefully normal blood sugars long before then.  I would like to hear from any other diabetics that have been able to go off their meds after a VSG.

The journey begins....

Welcome to the Florida Board. I had the DS 9 months ago and have no more problems with diabetes. I chose the DS because I wanted the malabsorption. Good luck with your surgery.

Hello and Welcome! Congrats on your surgery date as well.  After 2 months of my RNY, I no longer needed Glucophage...3 1/2 years out and my blood sugars are perfect! Good luck to you!

I had type II diabetes and had my surgery 4-23-09 rny  down from 411 to 288 and have been off my metformin for about 1 month.  Good luck with your surgery.

Thank you, Jill.

I am just wondering if I have chosen the "correct" surgery for diabetes remission. I hesitate to say "cure", I don't think there is enough data yet to call it that.

The DS cures diabetes and Dr. Gagner is a top notch DS surgeon.  If you will post a message on the DS board I know there are some studies that people reference related to the DS and diabetes.  But I do not have them.

Thanks, Red and Larra.

I did have a long meeting with Dr. Gagner and his PA, Genevieve and they think the sleeve is the best surgery for me because my diabetes is still in the early stages and my BMI is not that high. He said in his experience the resolution is about the same rate for either DS or sleeve.

I am not too enthusiastic about malabsorption. I has 2 friends (sisters) who died after gastric bypass surgery, and that is always in the back of my mind. True, it was 25 years ago and it was the orginal (barbaric, some say) surgery. A lot has changed since the early days.

Yes WLS has changed a great deal in the last 25 years.   You have chosen a top notch surgeon, with a proven track record and that is very much in your favor.  I hope your surgery goes well and that you have an easy recovery.

Hi! I have sent you a pm.
I agree with Red, come on over to the DS board and learn more about it. It has the highest rate of resolution of type 2 diabetes of any WLS. It also has the best average percentage of excess weight loss, best maintainence of that weight loss (so important!) and best resolution of comorbidities. Check it out!
