I've been recommended to Shands by my Doctor. I don't know anything about Shands. What can I expect? Thanks, Tiff

You should expect great things.  Shands, whether its in Jacksonville or Gainesville, is a teaching hospital and has the best doctors available in order to teach with expertise.  My surgeon does surgery there when he's doing multiple procedures....such as the band and a gallbladder removal.  I live in Jacksonville and for as big as this city is and with all the hospitals we have, Shands is the one that has the trama center.  It is an outstanding hospital, just as the one in Gainesville is.  I can remember people from Jacksonville driving to Gainesville to be seen and/or treated at Shand's because it was better than any hospital we had in the city. I'm curious, why did your doctor recommend Shand's?  And is this your surgeon or your PCP that has recommended you go to Shand's?  Just curious. La Wanda

Shands is great.  Ive had both of my babies there and I will be having my surgery there.  I am very familiar with it because my daughter was in NICU there for 23 days.   I am familiar with gainesville also. feel free to ask me anything.

I work there, and will be having my RNY there next Monday.  I love my job and my surgeon, I have nothing but positive experiences with Shands. If I can answer any questions for you, I'd be happy to do so.

Dr. Sharma was my MD for "vertical banding" surgery--also known as stapling. I had no complaints regarding the phusician. However, my overall hospital experience was a nightmare. Following open abdominal surgery for the gastroplasty, there was no room in the ICU's and I had to stay in the Recovery Room on a stretcher all night. That would not have been too band, but the 1 nurse had 6 patients (normal ICU ratio is 1 nurse to 2 pt) There weren't any curtains between stretchers, so no privacy---the patient to my one side was in DT's (alcohol withdrawl, not lucid, screaming) and the person on my other side was shackled to the stretcher with hand cuffs. The next day I was transferred to med-surg unit, my room-mate had constant company of at least 4 adults/children. I was finally given a bath basin and toiletries on day 3 when I was heading out the door to go home. Bath basin only cost me $30.
Would I recommend "Shands----NO WAY, unless yyou are a trauma pt and have a room reservation!
