Hello! I am "new" to the New Tamp/Wesley Chapel area. Just moved back in May after living in TN for 14 years. I am looking into the Lap Band surgery, and my insurance, BCBS of AL requires a 6 month medically supervised weight loss program. I will be doing WW, but need to also be seeing a doctor at the same time. I don't have a PCP in the area yet. Can anyone recommend one that has been supportive with his or her WLS journey? Thanks in advance! -Debbie

Welcome home Debbie. We're here to help you as well as everyone Journeying to better themselves healthwise. Who are you considering to place the Banding in you. They should know of some Primary WLS Friendly Doctors plus BCBS of AL should have a Listing of PCPs in your area that are on your plan. As to the Supervised WeightLoss Program - that has to be your PCP Supervised Monthly Documented Diet. Most Insurance Plans DO NOT accept Weigh****chers, Jenny or other planned Programs.  Have you've looked at www.journeylite.com which is doing Lap Bandings in Tampa Bay but will be openning it's own facility shortly in the New Tampa area? Their also a National OH Sponsor. On Sept. 29th at Citrus Park Mall is the "Walk From Obesity" www.walkfromobesity.com where several Bariatric Programs will be represented at the Walk's Health Fair. Hi Debbie, Welcome back!  I live in tampa and had the rny on aug 22nd done by  Dr. Michele Murr through Tampa general hospital.  I did a lot of research going in to this and I liked what I learned about him and have thus far been satisfied w/the surgery! You can find him through the digestive disorders link on the tama general website. Most of all, do your research and see who works best for you. good luck!

Hey Debbie! I'm new to the Tampa Bay area too! I'm up in Pasco County. AND I also have BCBS of Alabama! They were very good about approving my surgery but I bugged the %^&S out of them almost every day. It took 3 weeks from the time they got my file from my surgeon until I got my approval and they told me on the phone when I called them. Two days before I got my approval they asked for a dated photo of me taken in 2005 because I didn't have any medical record of my weight that year. I overnighted the photo to them and they approved me right away!  Let me know if you have any questions about them and I'll be happy to give you my experience.  I am ALSO in need of a good primary care doc and have yet to find one. I found a PCP who went through the 6 month supervised diet with me but in that time I could see she is not at all knowlegable about bariatric surgery and has no interest in learning. She thinks it's all up to my surgeon and she doesn't NEED to know about meds, nutrition etc.  So I'm very anxious to hear if anyone has any referrals for us.   Someone had suggested a Dr. Sullivan in Spring Hill  who I  was told used to be a bariatric surgeon. I called  and found out that is not true and they don't take our insurance anyway. So I am back to square one. BTW..... my friend and I are starting an OH support group in Pasco County.... not that far from Wesley Chapel. It's in Hudson... just North of New Port Richey. We'd LOVE to have you join us! Our first meeting is Next Wednesday the 19th. Drop me a line if you think you'd like to come!
