Where is the best place to live in Florida? Is there an area that does not get hurricaines?  Thanks Moira

About 5 years ago my DH and I were asking the same questions. We moved to FL 3 1/2 years ago after doing extensive research. We settled in Port St. Lucie (east coast, about 45 minutes north of West Palm Beach). Part of our reason for choosing this location is that there hadn't been a hurricane for over 60 years in this area. Imagine our surprise when, during our first year here, Hurricanes Frances and Jeannie came for an unwelcome visit. It's good to do your research but remember that no matter how much checking we do, Mother Nature has a mind of her own! Good luck with your research. If you have any questions about the area I live feel free to send me a PM. JPat

Moira, I just moved to Bradenton Sarasota area from Centennial colorado. The area hasnt had a Hurricane in 53 years. It is a town of about 53,000 and very laid back. Not to much crime to my knowledge. If you want action like a big city you can go to Sarasota that is 9 miles away. It has fancy rastaurants, artsy boutiques, boats, museams things like that. Their is Tampa near by. Carla klein

Anywhere in Florida could be hurricane territory.  Ocala hadn't had a hurricane in a long time, but in 2004 the entire central Florida area got hit.  It was only a category 1 when it went through, but that was bad enough.  Orlando also doesn't get hurricanes often, but they did in 2004.  It was a banner year, lemme tell ya!!  If you don't want hurricanes, you can move to Nebraska, but then you have tornadoes!!  If it's not one thing, it's another, so you make the best decision you can and pray about the rest.

Amen to that!   Actually my kids like having hurricanes coming...LOL  It means we get to sleep on the floors downstairs.  If we lose power it means, cooking out in the front yard for days on end, hanging out by the fans.  I am glad we bought a generator during 2004, had too...I was recovering from my surgery.   No matter where you live you have Mother Nature to contend with....floods, earthquakes, snowstorms, ice storms, hurricanes...blah blah blah.  Just pick where your comfortable and live your life to its fullest.

In my former life I was paid staff for the Red Cross and then FEMA. I am still an ARC disaster volunteer. So I feel that as both a disaster worker and an FL resident that I can state without equivocation that the entire state is a hurricane magnet.

Seriously, with the warm water surrounding the state, the jet streams, and a 100 other variables, Florida is as vulnerable to hurricanes as Texas is to tornados.

My family and I moved from NY to Florida because we were tired of the snow.  Since moving here we have been luck so far (knocking on wood) that no hurricanes have hit our area - I am in Altamonte Springs).  My parents moved her as well but they are in the Villages.  Beautiful place but they were lucky when a nasty tornado tore through their part of the villages.  Like the others state.  You can't be sure where a hurricane will hit.  I wish you luck in your decisions!
