Post op vitamins?

Ok I guess I have to turn to you guys for this answer. I've called my surgeons office THREE times and each time they promised to fax me the information and still they have not. My surgeon, Dr. Gonzalvo  verbally told me what I'd need... he even wrote it down but wrote it on a paper that I had to sign so he took it back. There was so much information he verbally gave me that day that I don't remember exactly what vitamins I will need post op and what doses. I would like to buy them now to make sure I have what I need already when I get home from the hospital. I'd rather get the info from him but since it seems that's not going to happen, I wonder if you all could help me there.  Thanks! Marianne C.

HI Marianne!! My surgeon instructed me on the first year to take Flinstones chewables 2x a day .  Since then I take Centrium adult chewables and so far labs are  perfect.  I also take citrical chocolate fudge 2x a day as a calcium supplement....hope that helps some.  Good Luck!!!  Melanie

Thank you Melanie!!  What about B12, Iron and folic acid?  Your surgeon didn't advise you to take extra supplements of those? I know one of the ones he told me I'd need is B12.. .don't remember the dose though. I also THINK he said something about iron and folic acid but I'm not sure if that is what the other ones are or not and if so what dose. Sigh. I guess I'll just have to ask in the hospital and have my husband go get them. It's just that he often doesn't get what I ask him to so I'd rather have it taken care of before I go in for surgery.  I'm very surprised that others have not replied to my question. I thought sure this group would know the answer. -Marianne C.

On the other supplements such as folic acid and b12, I was instructed that if you eat the proper diet, you should not have to supplement.  Now on the iron, I tend to bake in an iron skillet, not sure if it helps but never have had low iron.  I have done b12 in the past, but honestly don't feel a difference, so for me it's a waste.  I will be out 2 yrs and so far labs are great, but I eat lots of fresh veggies, mainly raw most of the time, protein is not a problem.

My bet on the low response is it's Saturday and most are at walmart!!!!

Marianne, at the very beginning you will only  need to take a multivatimin, preferably a chewable one. Also need to take calcium. + The B12 will come later, about 4 months, when the  blood work is done and if the level is too low the doc with tell you to take b12, but not before.  I started taking folic acid a few months after the surgery to help with the hair loss b/c someone here recommended it but I do not know  for sure if it works. My hair still fell and continous to.  That's all I take, hope it works for you. Beatriz

Hi Marianne,

For my first two weeks, I was on Centrum liquid until my pouch healed and swelling went down. After that - and still today - I use Building Blocks multi, calcium and iron. I give myself B-12 shots once every two weeks. Here is an idea of what I am taking daily:

Thanks so much Beatry, Kristen and Melanie!  You're replies have all helped me. It looks like it's not critical that I start any of these right away other than the chewable multi which I have already. So I guess I can wait until I'm better IF I find I need others.  I knew I could count on my OH friends!  Hugs, Marianne
