Dr. Jawad-PreOp

So, I have my pre-op tomorrow and have not lost a pound! I also have not been doing it 100%. I have been reading on other message boards that some patients were cancelled if they did NOT lose weight. Does Dr. Jawad do this too? My pre-op is tomorrow, but my surgery is not until 8/17 so I still have some time to lose some weight. I guess my fear is that I will be cancelled. Please let me know if you have been through this or any insight.

Everyone understands that it's tough to lose weight with a full-sized stomach, but part of what they want to see is if you will be compliant with the surgeon's instructions.  I hope your pre-op goes well, but remember it's a very long day.  Thankfully you get all kinds of great information in writing so you don't have to remember everything. Your surgery is on a Friday?  I am assuming that you are having the lap band then?  Do you have a good plan in place to help you make good good choices since dumping won't be a consideration?  Remember that it's easy (easier) at first, but gets harder and harder later on.  Use the honeymoon period to really change your habits and you will do well. Good luck!!

Hey Jan... I wish my doctor gave us more in writing. I really have gotten VERY little in writing. In fact I've called twice the last 2 days to get my vitamin requirements from them.  Two days in a row they have told me they would fax them and so far nothing. I also asked them to give me my diet requirements post op in writing too.  They told me they don't have anything in writing on the post op diet. I'm a bit disappointed in that aspect of the program I am in.  You also mentioned that the pre op testing is a long day. I have my appointment for pre op tomorrow at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater and they told me all I need to do is blood work, a chest xray and an EKG.  What pre op testing did you have that takes all day? -Marianne C.

Marianne,

I know I am not Jan but in the mean time before she responds, I will try to explain Dr J's progam.  The pre-op day is spend in his office going over eveything you already know and more.  The diet is explained in detail and the physical therapy is also explained, on what you can do right after surgery and later.  He has the whole program set in stone and it is all handed out in writing as well.  He is a center for Excellance and this is his program.  Than you met with him and than go to the hospital for tests, blood, xray, ekg, blood type.  I would be happy to share what I have with you as we do live close.  But your doctor may not want you to follow Dr Jawad's plan.   But I will be of any help you need.  PM me or call 352-683-7600 Sandy Wesley

You may not be me, Sandy, but you did a great job!!!  You might want to rethink posting your phone number on the internet, however!  Ya never know who is monitoring boards. The vitamins that Dr. Jawad recommends is a good multi-vitamin with at least 5-10 mg. of Thiamin (B1) and 1,000 mg. Calcium (personally I think Citrate is the only way to go and don't believe in Tums for Calcium, but that's my opinion), also B12 and iron.   Dr. Jawad's patients get the post-op food progression, vitamin regimen that starts one week post-op, and lots of other information on the Thursday pre-op meeting.

Hi, Ali, How did your pre-op go?  In many cases (mine, anyway) he wanted some weight loss to reduce fatty liver issues.  Many obese patients have fatty liver whether diagnosed or not.  Hope it all went well and you're still scheduled as planned.  Good luck.  Are you having lapband?  Or bypass?

Hey Ali! Since I had the band with Dr Jawad, I thought I would post and answer. I went into my pre-op and had not lost any weight being on the liquid/low carb diet either. I think they can tell if things have changed by your stats they look at too...and not to worry, I was not 100% perfect on my diet either! I have not heard of him cancelling anyone because of this, but I guess it is possible. The only real reason for the preop diet is not to loose weight, but to shrink your liver a little for the operation, which is why the liquids and low fat diet. So, I would just say to be as good as possible on your last week.  What the other posters say about what goes on during the preop is pretty close, but it is a little different for band vs. RYN. You will go in and speak to Dr J about the procedure and go over the possible complications, expections, diet, and any qestions you have. Then you will go and have your blood work/ekg, etc done. Then, you will go to the hospital or surgery center (where I went) and talk to the anestisiologist so he can examine your throat for the tube, and the nurses can get you into the system and ready. It is a long process, but not bad at all. Ytou will not go over the vitamins like the RYN patients do, as we do not have to take them. Just make sure you have all your questions answered about what to eat and when, and anything else. If you have any additional questions, feel free to send me a message and I will help in any way possible :) GOOD LUCK!!!

Amy
