Does anyone know if tricare will pay for this type of surgery
Which kind of surgery. Tricare covers the gastric bypass (RNY) and gastroplasty and vertical banded gastroplasty(the last two are very rarely done these days) both open and lap. In order to qualify one must be 100lbs over ideal body weight with comorbidites or 200% over ideal body weight with no comorbidites. They use the met life height and weight chart to determine ideal body weight. The policy lists as accepted co-morbidities diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cholecystitis, narcolepsy, Pickwickian syndrome (and other severe respiratory diseases), hypothalamic disorders and severe arthritis of the weight-bearing joints.
Oh and the vertical banded gastroplasty is not the same as lap band, nor is it the same as the gastrectomy.
If you will send me a PM with your email address I can send you the full Tricare policy.
