I got a surgery date today! I will be getting the lap-band on 8/17/07 with Dr. Jawad in Ocala. I had planned on going the insurance route, but after talking with a few different insurance people, they felt that since my BMI is 37 and I don't have any significant co-morbids, that they probably wouldn't approve me anyway. Besides, I thought my PCP was going to make up 6 months worth of dieting for me, but I got another story at my appointment with her today. I really don't want to wait 6 more months and then have them deny me anyway, so I decided to go the self-pay route. My pre-op is 8/9 and the surgery will be 8/17! Ali

Congrats on your date! It sucks that we have to pay for our surgery ourshelves, but you're probably right about being denied. My insurance doesn't even cover WLS (I'm told cause we're a small company), but I'm about the same as you so probably wouldn't be approved anyway. I got the surgery clearance from my PCP this morning. Going to Celebrations on Wed afternoon for the chest x-ray and EKG. Then hoping to get the surgery scheduled end of July with Dr. Kim. Congrats on your date!! Looks like we've got a few self-payors on this board. My company expressly excludes bariatric surgery--do doubt an effort to keep premiums down. So short-sighted of insurance companies to charge so much more for this coverage, but don't get me started... Keep us posted!! Good luck!!
