BAD HAIR DAYS!!

I am having some bad hair days lately, in the beginning of post op (19 months ago) I had no problems with my hair, but lately its looking awful, its starting to break, and I am trying to grow it but that's kind of stopped happening now. I look after it, i condition it, i eat very healthy getting in all my vitamins, proteins and liquids, I am going thru meno unfortunately so that could be a factor. I am going to try biotin vitamins and even the shampoo and see if that helps. It does come out when I wa****  but that has always happened and its not thinning, its just lame and dull. Any other suggestions would be welcome. Thanks

Can you be more specific about the protein and vitamins?  How much protein are you taking in each day and what's your vitamin regimen?  Is there any improvement that you might do?

I have somewhere between 60-74 gr of protein which is what my daily intake should be, and I take a multi 3 x daily, iron x 1 a day, calcium 2 x day, fish oil 2 x day which are the vitamins on my plan from my dr.

The obvious targets were the protein, which you seem to be taking in enough and the vitamins.  You didn't post if your vitamins are in tablet form which would be very difficult to absorb or if they are a high quality bariatric vitamin.  Hair is healthy from the inside out and so the protein and supplements are the first things you need to check.

Multi's are bariatric, otherwise fish oil and iron from whole foods and calcium citrate from drugstore, but all absorbable and they are in tablet form I never did well with the chewables YUK!

Your original post said all suggestions were welcome so instead of posting something that might look like I'm being argumentative and that's not my intent, I do have an idea.   Try any other vitamin and supplement protocol in another form other than tablets that you can't dissolve in your dry pouch for just one month and see if it makes any difference at all.  Hate chewables?  Bet liquid would be even worse!  Maybe some nice capsules from Vitalady.com would be in order or the Solgar brand capsules from BariatricEating.com. If it makes zero difference, then it's no harm no foul and if it does make a difference, then you know where the problem was.

Thanks so much for your advice I may give that a try, I am going to Europe next week for 8 days so will try when I return as I never want to try anything new while I'm away. And  help is greatly appreciated and felt arguementative at all!! Thanks again

Joanne, Just within the last two months or so, my hair has gotten back to what it was two years ago.  Be sure you use a good shampoo and moisturizing conditioner.  If you color and perm...ouchie, try to put less stress.  For example color and not perm for a while.  I broke down and got a good shampoo  and conditioner from my hairdresser and although expensive, it has been good for my hair.  I also use a protein liquid ( from sallys beauty supply) right after I color once a month, and occasionally put cholesterol (from sallys) on my hair about once a month. Sounds like you are getting your protein and stuff, so that seems ok.  Is your thyroid ok?  If that is hypo that could account for the hair problems too. Keep in touch. blessings, Tami

Hi Tami,

Thanks for replying. I am also using an expensive shampoo from my hairdresser, and will also try the biotin shampoo, i ordered it from a website called Puritin.com where i also ordered the biotin vitamins, it was buy 1 get 2 free!! What shampoo/conditioner are u using now and what's the protein liquid and cholestrol from Sallys called. Every bit of info helps so I appreciate it.

By the way, I have been keeping in touch with Marli and she seems to be doing good so far!!

Take care,

Hey Jo! I'm not sure how you process your hair - are you coloring? blow drying, curling or straightening it? Whatever the process try using Silk Therapy from Sally shops - they have the entire line and the shampoo and conditioner as well as Liquid Silk is what I use to keep the Shine locked in. I'm with you about the protein intake and vit/supplements however the same thing happened to me about 4 months ago. I switched shampoo @ my hair dresser's suggestion and I have been fine since! Try good old fashion curlers on the weekends to give your hair a break from everything and PS: a good haircut every 6 weeks should keep it looking great!  Take care! Barbi
