Just wondering what I can expect regarding Dr, Kim's pre-op diet for lap banders.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  How soon before surgery does the diet start?  What does it consist of?  Liquids only?  Low carb food?  Did you have any trouble sticking with the pre-op diet? Thanks!

Hi Jen! How's your journey progressing?  I had my PCP surgery clearance this morning - so that's done!  I'm going down to the hospital Wed. afternoon to have the EKG (though my PCP already did one this morning) and chest x-ray.  That's all I need to have my surgey scheduled. After my nursing assessment phone call last week one of Dr' Kim's nurses sent me some information, whi*****lude a pre-op diet that I should begin immediately: - no starches or simple sugars (no bread, pasta, rice, candy or other sweets) - cut meal portions in half - eat lean proteins (chicken and fish) and have a fresh fruit or vegetable with each meal - consume two (2) servings of dairy per day (skim milk or lowfat yogurt) - take an adult formula multiple vitamin two times per day (any brand) - exercise at least five (5) days per week, increasing intensity and time (brisk walking or swimming) Then it says "...more specific pre-op diet advice will be given at the pre-op patient education class..." - I guess at that point it must per patient, as I've read about so many different instructions. Have a great day!

Thanks so much, Pattilyn.  That's great info.  My journey begins on Saturday when I have my psych eval.  I have an appt with my PCP on 7/25.  Hoping to have surgery in early September.  Hope that works out.   Keep us posted about your surgery date.  This is a very exciting time!!

Im also going to Dr. Kim  I do not have a surgery date as of yet.  I already had my phys eval , My surgery had been approved by my insurance company that was the big stopping point,  I had my nutri eval,  I had my EKG today  the Cardiologist made me feel bad.   He said I need to try another diet and exercise more.  If he only new how much I been going through the past 20years of my life trying to get my weight down.  He scheduled me for 2 nuclear stress test.  So now I have to wait another couple of weeks.  I thought once I got my insurance approval it would be smooth sailing,  boy was I wrong.  It just seems like Im hitting stumbling blocks all along the way.   Sorry to be so long winded.   I could not schedule my sleep study until I see a the sleep study specialist .  The first appointment I could make was  Aug 7,2007.  After that appointment then I can schedule the sleep study and who knows how long that will take.  Well since Ive been waiting since 2004 this is the closest Ive gotten..   Im hoping to have my surgery sometime in Sep. as well God Bless

Sorry to hear you're having to clear so many hurdles, but it will all be worth it in the end, and your long wait along with your cardiologist's unpleasantness will be nothing but a foggy memory.  It's great that you got insurance approval!   Who knows?  Maybe we'll be band buddies!!  Keep us posted on your testing!! Best of luck for a speedy surgery date!

Though you've been on your "journey" for a while, everything will be worth it at the end!  It's great that your insurance has approved the surgery!  And all the other tests are for your own good.  Don't listen to nay-sayers - you know what you've been though and have to do and you've made a great decision for yourself - that's all that matters. Take care and keep us posted!
