My surgeon sent me  a registered letter saying it was not in their best interest to perform my surgery due to the fact that i could not afford to go all over the state to see people he reffered me to   my surgeon is a very nice man  but i think that the fact that i told them i was bipolar to begin with that they should have told me b4 anything eles if they would not do it  instead they said if it is mananged it should be fine now they are saying they cant take my case as it is not in their best interest   yikes what about my best interests ?

Request copies of all of your tests and start looking for a new surgeon.  Have you already had the psych eval?   Red

I agree, find another doc.  Sometimes things happen we don't understand at the time, but they really do work out for our best.  So don't give up, just find another way! blessings, Tami

Being bipolar is not usually a problem in itself - it does, however, require a psychotherapeutic alliance and medication evaluation (the latter especially if you are having a malabsorptive surgery like the RNY or DS).

I would take the letter at face value and not read too much into it. I applaud those who are upfront if they feel that they will not be able to take care of you at the highest possible level. I truly do feel that this *is* in your best interest. Start looking gain for a surgeon who feels comfortable with your unique needs. You'll probably find that this was a blessing in disguise.

i would like to take the time to thank everyone who has taken the time to give me a little more insight in this situation  i am sure that they are wonderful surgeons i do not have one thing against them and would recommend them highly to others  now that i am thinking everything through i am really glad they didnt perform my surgery and that they are looking out of my best interests because what if something did happen after surgery  i know there will be an answer for me  and i am not giving up on myself

Your positive attitude says VOLUMES about you Kristen.  I can see you're not a quitter and you're going to continue on in your journey as though this is just another challenge which you WILL overcome. Your knowlege that is is a blessing in disguise is admirable. Dust yourself off and move on and find the surgeon who is right for you. I had a surgeon quite on me almost at the very end of my journey and I know now in hindsight it was the best thing that could have happend. I have no doubt that this is the case for you too.  Keep us posted. Hugs, Marianne C.

I'm with Red. Get your files and find you a new surgeon.  This one is not for you.

Wow...that's a new one.  Dr. Gordon did my RNY last November, and I chose him because of very negative experiences I had with other surgeons in Pinellas County (Tampa Bay area).  Dr. Gordon didn't send me all over the state for consultations.  He DID make sure that I had necessary pre-op testing done, including a pulmonary consultation, sleep study, chest x-ray, abdominal ultrasound, psych eval, EGD, nutrition consult, and some blood work.  I was able to do all of these tests within a 5-week time period, and I never left the immediate area.  I also understood that these tests were for my own safety. Now I CAN however tell you NIGHTMARE stories about some other local surgeons (one in particular!) who I interviewed before deciding on Dr. Gordon.  The "one in particular" did very cursory testing and didn't seem to hesitate to operate on ANYONE, regardless of how dangerous the surgery may have been for them.  I have come to realize over the past year that this other doctor and his practice seem to be primarily out for the monetary take, not the patient's welfare.  I would seriously question a doctor who does NOT demand thorough testing prior to surgery.  Ultimately, it is in your best interest. Have you spoken with Chris at Dr. Gordon's office?  She provides a list of suggested providers, but I don't think you are bound to that list.  I wasn't.   If you haven't already, why not give Chris a call and ask if you can go to whatever doctors you have in mind?   Keep us posted.   ~ Terri
