Bariatric Surgeon Performs the First StomaphyXâ„¢ Procedure in the Southeast U.S. at Munroe Regional 06/19/2007

On Wednesday, June 13th, Dr. Todd Overcash of the Florida Bariatric Center performed the first NOTES (Natural Orifice Transesophageal Surgery) procedure at Munroe Regional Medical Center. This procedure featured an endoluminal gastric pouch reduction and an endoluminal gastric sleeve procedure. "The StomaphyXâ„¢ procedure represents a step forward in providing less invasive solutions to the complex issue of weight management and control," said Michael Wesolowski, vice president of operations at Munroe Regional Medical Center. "It offers patients another alternative to consider in the array of options before them. Munroe Regional Medical Center is proud to be the only hospital in the Southeast providing this service to our community." Dr. Overcash is one of only four surgeons in the United States trained to perform this state-of-the- art procedure and the first in the Southeast. The procedure uses the StomaphyXâ„¢ device, which allows the surgeon to perform the procedure without any external or internal incisions. It is available for individuals who have had previous gastric bypass surgery and who are regaining weight and those who want an alternative to invasive weight loss surgery. In most cases, the StomaphyXâ„¢ procedure is performed as outpatient surgery. The benefits of this procedure include: Less clinical risk because there is no need for surgical incisions. Enables the surgeon to reduce the size of the stomach. Preserves future treatment options. Essentially no pain for the patients. Faster recovery than with open/laparoscopic procedures.   "The StomaphyXâ„¢ allows me, as a surgeon, to offer patients the most comprehensive weight loss options in the country," said Dr. Todd Overcash. "This is the most affordable weight loss surgery available, the least invasive, and has the lowest risk of complications. There is essentially limited recovery time for the patient, which allows the patient to return to their daily activities and work environment, typically on the same day." For more information on Munroe Regional Medical Center or the StomaphyXâ„¢ procedure, please contact Munroe's Health Resource Line, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., at (352) 867-8181 or email Health Resource Line

How long does this Presentation usually last? As we'd be interested in attending but would also be interested in setting up an OH Meet & Greet somewhere afterwards closeby too, on one or both of the Saturday Seminars.  Who is interested in a Meet & Greet in Ocala or Orlando? Mike

One of the times noted is about 1 to 1.5 hrs - so it doesn't seem long, but I guess that would also depend on how many questions arise at the meetings. In  my business of timeshare we tell people it's a  90 min presentation however if the guests talks alot by asking lots of questions (which is also fine) the presentation then will be longer.  It is something definately worth looking into.

I'm not interested in this procedure for myself. But want to learn about it as a OH Support Group Leader. And want to be informed to be able to answer questions that are presented about it.

I feel the same way Michael.  Knowledge is power!! And as a OH Leader it's great that you want to know more about all procedures/processes to help others!! Perhaps you can give us your thoughts after you've gone to one of the seminars.

I, too, am a support group leader and I'm up in Jacksonville, FL.  I had heard of Dr. Overcash being the surgeon who was going this procedure and am very interested......for a learning point of view, not having the surgery myself.  On of Dr. Overcash's patients is in my support group and she asked (at my request) for some info on the procedure the last time she saw him, which was just recently. He didn't have any brochures at the time and now I see this post.  Any chance he'll be coming closer to Jacksonville to talk about the procedure.  I've been invited to his support group meeting on Saturday, the 14th, and will ask the same question at that time.  But if you happen to know if that's in the works, or could be made to happen, please let me know. La Wanda

Hi Wanda - I think having a seminar in Jacksonville is doable! However, the meetings are scheduled and sponsored by Munroe Regional Hospital.  The article and "sign up" of the meetings are on Munroeregional.com.  I believe they have their phone number there plus a contact person.  Also you may contact the Dr. OC 's office at (352) 368-6868 to find out any numbers or if Dr. OC will come out there. I believe that IF there is a good number of people that would be interested in finding out and wanting the procedure in Jacksonville  - I believe that he will visit personally and bring any information.  OOOOOH if you're coming to the July 14 meeting at the Comfort Inn in Jacksonville - I will be there and it will be nice to meet you!! I believe Christeena is working on bringing some information on the procedure - so you're right about that. But I believe if you call the office and let them know you and your group are interested that will push OC to respond more quickly on the 14th!  Keep me posted!! Hoping to see you on the 14th!! Ruthy
