What can I expect as a pre op diet?  Thanks.

check my profile, I have lots of info there from Dr Kim.  He is fantastic, very caring and I would recommend him so highly.  I'm excited for you. Pre op may  be liquid depending on how much fat you may have around your liver, otherwise I did the post op diet pre op, to prepare my mind. blessings, Tami

At the nursing assessment, we recommend that patients start to cut their portion is half, and to focus on a lean protein source, vegetables and fruits. Stay away from starches (rice, bread, pasta, potatoes, corn).

Pre-op appointmkents are generally two weeks before surgery. If, at that time, Dr. Kim feels that your liver is enlarged, you may be placed on a high protein liquid diet. Some may be placed on the same high protein liquids, but with some foods. One size does not fit all.

I was thinking of starting some sort of pre op diet now to not slow down my surgery process.  I have heard some people drink Slim-Fast Optima.  I am going to try them this weekend.

Hi Eli,

Anything healthy that you can start now is always a benefit when one is thinking about any type of surgery. Let me know how they taste. I am still in love with my Nectar, but those aren't designed for meal replacement as are Slim-Fast.

Hi Kristin, I think we spoke on the phone this week.  I am proceeding with Lap Band surgery with Dr. Kim.   I did have a question for you all that I forgot to ask.  How many lap band procedures has Dr. Kim done?  How many does he do per week on average? My psych eval is scheduled for 7/14.  I'm VERY excited!!  Looking forward to meeting you in person Jen

Hi Jen,

Whew, I'll have to check for recent stats. He'll do more than 450 surgeries this year. Next week we have 17 scheduled. I'll get the Lap-Band specific stats, though.

I have to lose 200 lbs, so I was on the high protein liquid diet for 2 weeks prior to surgery. Before that, I followed the diet that Kristin described, cutting my servings in half and eleiminating sugar and bread / starchy carbs.  If you can, every Wednesday there is an open meeting at Celebration Health where you can go and get info on Bariatric Surgery. I think it starts at 6:30, but call to be sure. When I went with my husband, Dr. Kim was giving the talk that night and he stayed after to answer questions. It might be good to attend that meeting.  Everyone there is so helpful and so wonderful. I wish you much luck and success on your journey.

jon always by you.

Thanks. I did attend one of these meetings but when I went to talk to him he seemed in a rush to go. It was getting late too.  I am curious about the support groups and whether someone can go and sit in on one before surgery. Anyone know?

Yes. Anyone at any stage of surgery can attend the support group on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:30PM. After surgery, you can attend the Beginning the Journey group. Post-ops 1.5 years of more out can attend the Maintaining the Journey group. We also have a Friends and Family group and a Lap-Band only group.
