I'm in a bad place today

Today is the first day I'm honest to goodness feeling discouraged. I'm so weepy too. It's pretty pathetic. I updated my blog with what's going on, but in a nutshell....I don't understand why my scale hasn't budged, nor have my measurements.  I am getting in 600-700 calories a day. 50% protein, 10% fats, 30% calories. I am logging everything I eat. I am walking everyday.  I know we all lost at our own rate, but how can the scale not even move half a pound in ten days when I am probably only absorbing 400 of those 600 calories.  I went into more detail in my blog. But sad thing is, there's no "giving up". I've done all I can do. The only other thing I can do is not eat  (which I wouldn't consider doing). I'm just saying, I'm so discouraged because I've done EVERYTHING I can, including surgery. I don't get it!

I was told by my nut that 600 calories is starvation and that the body shuts down your metabolism to compensate.  Therfore, no weight loss.   Adding food worked for me and my 3 week of nothing turned into a 1 week 10 pound loss.  Try adding some more calories or call your nut/surgeon and run this by them.

Don't be discouraged!!! I know it's hard and rough and it makes you feel like you want to give up or you did something wrong. You haven't. I went for 8 weeks without gaining or losing an ounce!! How frustrating is THAT!!! You have to learn to get off the scale. It can really bum you out at times. Once our bodies start to readjust things come to a standstill. Then it's time to try and switch things up. Maybe 600-700 calories a day isn't cutting it anymore. Maybe it's time to add a little more calories to what you're eating. Try more water, more protein, exercising a little bit more, maybe add 5 or 10 more mintues to what you are already doing. You have to play around with things and eventually it will kick back in again. You're just in a readjustment time. But please don't beat yourself up over this. You have done nothing wrong and it will happen just hang in there!!! Jo Ann

Marney-
Please be gentle with yourself and step away from the scale. You know you are doing all the right things and the loses will start again. Sometimes the body just takes a little break. I agree with the others that you may need to increase your food intake some so your body does not send out the signal that it is starving. Sometimes just a couple of days of eating a higher calorie diet or a few more carbs will shake things up a bit.

As to you being weepy. My goodness you are not so far out from surgery. Your body is still reeling from the anesthesia -- plus as you lose weight all those hormones that are stored in the fat cells are released. It just makes sense that along about now you might be feeling a little down. If these feelings continue or get worse please speak to your surgeon or PCP, you may need medication for a short while just until you get over all of the changes made to your system.

Please take care of yourself.

This is in a way like any other diet. We will have times when we don't lose. I know it's discouraging, and depressing, but it will happen. I have to agree with an earlier reply, call your nut,and ask what you can do.

God has brought you this far,and He isn't through with you yet.
It's a great day to be alive.

Marney you are not alone!! We've all been there...we're sooo excited by the initial weight loss and want to lose everyday every time but then our bodies have a mind of their and know when to stop temporarily. You have been through a hard process physically and your body reacts to that by losing weight immediately. However, at some point it does catch up with it and when it does that is when you "stop" losing. However, it won't be forever. Once the body catchs up with itself, it will stop losing again at a more slower weight but you will continue to lose. I remember when I stopped I felt very frustrated and thought I had done this surgery and that that was all I was going to lose was crazy but then after a couple of weeks I started to lose again til I lost 120 lbs. Now Im at a standstill because your body does stabilize eventually. Now I have to work on the remaining 20-30lbs the conventional way and that is not easy, but that is another story.  I would say not the "sad" thing but the happy thing is that you're not to "give up". Don't give up!! You will continue to move..let the body process the changes and keep up with your water, and protein etc and exercise and you will get moving again. This was not done in vain. Been there......

Hey Marney, After getitng on the scale at home 5 days after surgery and seeing a 7 pound gain, I had Troy put the scale on top of the fridge! I didn't step on it again and waited until my post op appointment with my doctor to see what I weighed. Also, everyone's body is different after surgery and I imagine that some people lose the IV fluids at a different pace. I probably lost mine quicker because my vein blew out the morning of the second day and it was removed by the afternoon. For those with their IVs in longer, it probably takes longer to lose that fluid.  What about fluid - are you getting in 80 oz of fluid a day? That definitely helps flush stuff out and keeps the body from retaining water.  Don't get discouraged - you are not doing anything wrong so the loss will come. That said, never be afraid to "bother" your surgeon with any questions - we paid them a sh*t ton of cash for this operation! Make 'em earn their dough! LOL!

jon always by you.

Thank you guys so very much. I am feeling better this morning. I told myself yesterday I was going to put the scale away. Did I? Nope. Got on it this morning and it has finally moved. Thank goodness! This is going to be a big challenge though....not basing how I'm feeling on how much (or if) the scale has moved.  At least now I'm not feeling like it's so futile. Thanks for all the encouraging words. I did email my nutritionist yesterday. So, we'll see how that goes.  I was just feeling so weepy yesterday too. Makes me wonder if I'm abosorbing my anti-depressants. I brought this up on another board and someone said they make my particular antidepressant in a liquid...Why in the heck am I still taking it as half pills or crushed up then??  I'm going to follow up on that today too. Thanks again!
