New Procedure for pouch Stretch and Weight Regain

A new medical procedure was just approved in February by the FDA called Stomaphyx.  Dr. William Todd Overcash (352) 368-2828 is one of the 5 doctors to have been given the priviledge to learn and use this new medical breakthrough for the post gastric bypass patient who has had significant weight regain or a stretched pouch. It is done endoscopically also - no cutting is involved.  He just had 5 procedures done this past Wednesday and already (to my knowledge) the patient has lost 6 lbs in 4 days.   The procedure reseals the pouch with plastic tubing and again this is done endoscopically (through the mouth). If you're interested please call the office.  I went to check out the process but luckily for me my weight gain was very minimal and I have actually maintain and can't eat a certain amount of food. But if you can eat a normal or more than normal plate of food (more than a cup, cup &  1/2 or have had significant regain. This may be something you may want to consider.  Also, it can be covered by insurance. I believe it might even be available to someone who is not post gastric but that is to far down the line to determine - and this is a guess from the person who told me. Let's just say that he can take care the regained post gastric bypass person for now.  Give his office a call to get more information!! (352) 368-2828.

Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd love that then...write to me privately at [email protected] with your address and phone number (I'll yahoomap it) or we can agree to meet along 1-75 in Palm Coast.  I'm so glad you'll come with me. I believe you are also right about 7/14 being the 2nd Saturday. It'll be really cool cause you'll meet those guys up there and also Christina I believe will be showing pics of the stomaphyx procedure. Someone who had it done already lost like 6lbs in 4 days!! It's amazing..but glad I don't it!! And thanks for the compliment!!  I'm glad to be coming back once to the board.  I had gotten away for quite a while...I guess ya try to be normal and "forget" this process to be normal and then you find out that you're really not normal - that you are - we are special and we can not be without those people that are like us - special. This is now helping me kinda get back on track. So thanks for being there for me too. See ya on 7/14!!!! ((HUGS))

I was curious about this procedure, and whether it could be used on someone who has not yet had weight loss surgery. I called Dr. Overcash's office and spoke with Dr. Overcash about this.  He said it really is designed for those with a BMI around 40 ish - but that in 6 months to a year he thinks it will be able to make a sleeve.  He said that the sleeve would enable me to lose only 50ish pounds though. So it sounds to me like, at least at present, this is something for those who've had the RNY or something and are gaining or stuck, or it's for those who are smaller than I am who haven't had any weight loss surgery.  Mary

That is correct - at this time it is for the post Gastric bypass patient.  But knowing how good Dr. OC is (in surgical terms) and his tenacity I think later on it can be available for someone who has had the surgery and this would be an option vs RNY. Thanks for calling and following up.

Any idea of the cost?

Since it's done endoscopically - it shouldn't be that expensive and in most cases there is no hospital stay. It is covered by insurance if your job allows it. Call the office - I hadn't gotten to that part but I'm don't think it would be that expensive.

I saw Dr. O on Tuesday and he explained to me that the cost is about $9500.  Compare that with $25000-$28000 for a revision!  He also said if you are a self pay you go home the same day if insurance is paying they require an overnight stay.   Hope this helps! Kat
