Has anyone tried using their Weight Loss Surgery Cards at restaurants to get a smaller portion for less money?  I went out to dinner and asked today and they never heard of it.   I just wondered if anyone knew of any restaurants that accept them in the Fort Lauderdale area.  Thanks, Hillary

Most WLS patients don't really use the restaurant cards that I've seen.  They order a small appropriate order, usually an appetizer since the restaurant cards give you the ability to order off the children't menu where you will just get fried chicken nuggets or some other poor choice. Since I see you're a Dr. Wizman patient, I would suggest you track down Teresa at BariatricEating in Pompano Beach.  She's about 4 years out and has been working with Dr. Wizman's patients.  I bet she could really give you some help.  Tell her I sent you.

I tend to just order off the appetizer menu, or if nothing looks good, I will go ahead and order a regular meal with a to-go box first thing. As soon as the plate comes, half goes into the box. That way I can eat my meal, following the small bites and chew well protocol, enjoy my meal and not be done eating way before my dinner companions. It also alleviates the tendancy to graze on leftovers still on my plate, while we are sitting and talking. I have learned it's eaisier to just say "I 'm just not a very big eater to justify it." I don't like having to explain my odd food habits to perefct strangers. If they ask, I will certainly tell them, but i prefer not to advertise it any and everywhere. Primarily, because I've noticed that it invites other's opinions on whether GBS is a good thing or not. As far as I'm concerned It was the right choice for me and unless you are A)my body or B)have lugged around 100+ pounds of extra weight, you don't get an opinion on this matter. I am 2 1/2 years from my Lap GBS and 8 weeks out of my LBL, with arms and the girls to be the next stop on the plastic surgery to-do list. In spite of getting pretty darn sick right after my bypass (strictures, internal incarcerated hernia, Christmas in ICU, etc) and the unreal financial whack that I am taking to have the plastics...its still worth every bit. Nevermind a pole dancer's body (that just a'int never gonna happen), I have a body I am proud of and according to my nursewho took care of me during my LBL..."a really cute little rump" **giggle**

I have used my card on both coast  Miami,Broward and Collier/Lee counties and for the most part have had no problems with it. I think it's in the way you present it too!. Most restaurents have been very accomidating.  Barbi

Where do you get these and how do they work?  Thanks.

They are cards the size of a business card that you get from your surgeon.  It says that you had weight loss surgery and asks that you be allowed to either order from a kid's menu or get smaller portions of food for a reduced price.  Some restaurants accept them but not all of them do.
