Today I met with Dr Small. He has agreed to accept me as a patient. We disscussed a different type of procedure. A gastric sleeve. He was leaving to day to go to a seminar by a Dr Phil Shower at the Cleveland Clinic. This is not a new procedure, but one that has the same results as a RYN. He is going up to check out the studies and discuss it. He has done these before but only for the super obese. The studies have shown the same results long term. I go back to him on the 22nd to find out more on this procedure. In the meantime I am going to set up my meet with the psych. & nutritinal dr. Has anyone heard any good or bad about the gastric sleeve?? :angle:

Hi Frank! How are you? It was really nice getting to meet you Friday night! It is great to be able to put some faces with all of the names. I am glad that you got to see the doc today. I don't know much about the gastric sleeve. I would check and see what is on OH about it and then just do plenty of research before reaching a decision. Did he say why he wanted to do this procedure on you instead of RNY? I would definitely ask him why if he didn't say and ask him what the advantage is in having this procedure. Hope all goes well for you. Keep us posted on how things are going.

Frank here is the OH link to the VSG - Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy How many of these procedures has he done successfully? http://www.obesityhelp.com/forums/VSG/ I'm thinking of a "Busch Gardens Meet & Greet" sometime this summer, besides one in the Jacksonville area plus down in the Keys at one of Don's hotels, what do you think?

Come over to the Obesity Help Vertical Sleeve Forum. There are a lot of us in FL that have had the sleeve. I had my done through Physicians Regional in Naples. A lot of others were done at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston. My doctor also recommended the sleeve. A much simpler operation and also, without the risk of malabsorbtion, which isn't so great for older folks.

You are right the gastric sleeve is not a new procedure. It is the stomach portion of the DS. However, it has only recently been done as a stand alone procedure and there is not a lot of data on the long term results. The good thing is that once the sleeve has been performed if one is not losing sufficient amounts of weight or is experiencing regain the intestinal portion of the DS can be performed at a later date.
