DATE !!! hopefully......
I scheduled my surgery with Dr Jawad for May 30th ! I am sooo excited. However, since my liver levels were elevated my PCP requested more blood work and an ultrasound of my liver...THEN they called yesterday and said that my sugar was high so they want me to come in for the 2 hour glucose test...from what I understand my "fatty liver" will shrink after the surgery and if my sugar is high the surgery will help get that under control. I am wrong in thinking all this? I am just afraid my PCP is going to order all these tests and do all this stuff and I am going to have to postpone my surgery....boohoo!

Hi Toni,
You can help combat these problems pre-op and it will only help your recovery time. Cutting back and losing weight pre-op shrinks the liver and helps stabalize some sugar/insulin issues. We all know that dieting is difficult, but every pound helps! I think some people get their surgery date and want to eat everything in sight because of the food restrictions waiting just around the corner. If it helps, you could view dieting now as a way to secure your surgery date of May 30th.
I'm a pre-op and my surgeon requires that all patients lose 10% of their body weight before he'll operate. The main reason for this pre-op weight loss is to shrink your liver. There are a lot of pre-ops out there already dieting, so you won't be alone. Try to fight the urge to over endulge just before surgery. Good Luck!!!! I wish you the best!
Toni,
First: Congrats on setting a date! Second: Most all of us have a fatty liver also noted it is enlarged as well. Dr. J will put you on a liquid diet 2 weeks prior to you surgery and this is said to help reduce the size of the liver making more room for him to do the surgery! I am one of the ones dealing with being dibetic and I went to my pcp today and prior to my surgery I was taking 2000mg of Metformin and 70 units of Lantus (insulin) 2times a day. I am 3.2 weeks post op and no longer have to take the metformin and only 10 units of Lantus a day! Not to also say no more bp meds or col. meds! Work hard to do what your pcp tells you but know Dr J. is a great Doc and will take great care of you! If you need more info you know I am good for it! LOL!!!
GOOD LUCK!

Thanks you guys! I was just worried when he told me about my liver and then to call a few days after about my blood sugar, just got me all stirred up! I guess I have been living on borrowed time all these years that I have been MO and had no problems..I guess I am really getting this surgery in the nick of time!
Will Dr J's office call me or send me something about the diet? I am not scheduled to see them until the 24th and then surgery on the 30th.....
Congrats about being off all that medicine! I am sure that is a great feeling! I only take Atenelol but I HATE taking it so I imagine you are loving getting off some stuff!
Thanks again!
Toni
